MUSIC NEWS: Lady Gaga's SXSW Vomiting Stunt Glamorizes Bulimia. Boo!

A new Care2 petition demands Lady Gaga stop glamorizing bulimia after she allowed performance artist Millie Brown to vomit on her during a show at popular music festival South By Southwest (SXSW). The Care2 petition already has over 9,000 signatures.

In a March 13th performance at SXSW, Brown vomited green liquid and black goo on Lady Gaga’s chest, prompting activists to protest the behavior as potentially triggering for those struggling with eating disorders. Lady Gaga recently admitted she has fought to overcome bulimia in the past.

The incident occurred shortly after Eating Disorders Awareness Week, which took place from February 23 to March 1. The Care2 petition asks Lady Gaga to end her professional relationship with Millie Brown and to stop using imagery that could trigger fans struggling with eating disorders.

“Eating disorders do not need to be glamorized. What kind of message are you sending to young girls?” wrote Care2 member Rosyln Budoff of Colorado. “Shame on you for this.”

Other Care2 members shared their personal struggles with the disorder.

“Bulimia is NOT funny or something to make lite [sic] of...I am a recovering Bulimic and I almost died in 2009,” wrote Kimberly Johnson of Alabama. “Eating disorders like this should NOT be glamorized!”

SXSW is a set of film, interactive and music festivals taking place annually in Austin, TX since 1987. This year, Lady Gaga was the headliner and keynote speaker of the outdoor stage at Stubb’s. SXSW has recently drawn controversy after three people were killed and 21 injured when a drunk driver evading arrest crashed his car into a crowd, prompting many to accuse the festival of having become too large and rowdy.
