Portland, OR's Typhoon is proud to premiere their new album White Lighter on NPR's First Listen.
NPR raves Typhoon play "mighty, powerful songs whose instrumentation conveys big, bold joy ... They've put out some memorable music, but the new White Lighter takes the promise they've shown and delivers completely. The uplifting melodies and rhythms that sway and swing, mixed with lyrics about hopeless dreams and cold realities, works so well. It's the kind of combination that has me singing words over and over - words that, if laid on paper, might not be ones I'd want stuck in my head. They're dark, but in that darkness can be found a sincere appreciation for the gift of life."
Spin Magazine calls first single Young Fathers a "mind-boggling chunk of orchestral pop," going on to say "this latest epic dives into the group's enormous range: Frontman Kyle Morton's earnest vocals lead the charge, his wondrous delivery flanked by left-field riffage, sudden fits of silence, chirping backup singers, and triumphant horns - and those are just a few of the sounds thriving inside 'Young Fathers.'"
Typhoon will head out on a North America headlining tour beginning September 5th in their hometown of Portland, OR. This six-week tour will include performances at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Pop Montreal and Music Fest NW, along with stops in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Tour dates below.
What makes White Lighter so great is the sense of borrowed time and urgency. A series of events suffered from a bug bite - failed organs, life spared thanks to modern medicine and a kidney given to him by his father - Kyle, the band's lead singer and songwriter, channeled his emotions into songwriting to create this big-hearted sound that bursts with a raw emotion and energy. The end result is a remarkably powerful and beautiful collection of songs.
"When we started working on White Lighter, I had reason to believe that it would be the last thing I ever did," says Kyle. "It is now six months since we finished. I'm still here and there's still work to be done."
Stay tuned for more exciting news and music!
