Taylor Momsen Led Pretty Reckless’ New EP ‘Hit Me Like A Man’ Is Ballsy and Brave. – Album Review

The Pretty Reckless’ new EP, “Hit Me Like A Man,” introduces a more alternative/blues sound than the successful pop/rock debut of “Light Me Up.” This is both a ballsy and brave move for the Taylor Momsen led rock group whose 2011 consisted of humongous supporting tours with Evanescence and Guns n’ Roses. Currently, the Pretty Reckless is playing dates with Goth/rock veteran Marilyn Manson.

The five song album, which includes live versions of “Make Me Wanna Die” and “Since You’re Gone,” adds the songs, “Hit Me Like A Man,” “Under The Water,” and “Cold Blooded.” These new songs, which I’m sure will find their way on the next full-length, hopefully set the tone of the sophomore effort.

What I love about this EP are the bluesy guitars and Fiona Apple-like rock vocals that Momsen’s raspy voice plays into beautifully.

The New Songs:

The guitar riff on “Hit Me Like A Man” is powerful and the tempo plays nicely with the lyrics. There’s a great bridge that slows down the song and some haunting violins in the background. Front to back this is a terrifically well-written song.

“Under the Water” is a ballad that starts off acoustically with Momsen singing quietly over. The guitars and drums kick in and the harmony carries the song with Momsen having an Amy Lee-like vocal recorded to play in between lyrics. This song showcases a guitar solo that the first album lacked.

“Cold Blooded Man” is a lounge/blues song duo between Momsen and I’m guessing, guitarist Ben Phillips. The guitar solo is bluesy and soulful. There is a lot of heart in this song and the writing is top notch.

If this is a taste of what to expect on the new album, The Pretty Reckless will have another successful effort. They may even headline their own major tour soon. I love this move and think fans will too.
