An Interview with Jason Corcoran of Gaston Light. - Interview

Gaston Light’s new album, “Peel,” is now available online and in stores. The craftsmanship of the songs’ lyrics is the result of storyteller, singer and songwriter Jason Corcoran’s outlook on life. I recently caught up with Corcoran to talk about Gaston Light, the new album and which song he likes playing live the most.

Q – Thank you, Jason, for talking to me.

A - Likewise. We'll see if I can hold your attention. I think I'm better at writing songs than talking about them. Ha ha.

Q – Your name is Jason Corcoran but you go by Gaston Light. Where exactly did the name Gaston Light come from?

A - Gaston Light for me, personally, meant two things. I did not want to pigeonhole myself into being pegged a "singer songwriter." I have seen it happen over and over again. Ryan Adams is a great example of that. As soon as he explored outside of the "alt-country" realm people turned on him. On the other hand Jeff Tweedy’s exploration was accepted a little more easily due to the moniker of Wilco. I could be wrong but a band seems to have a little more freedom. I wanted that. The name itself came from a street that I lived on in East Dallas, Gaston Avenue. It also happened to be the place where I dealt with my addiction and faced reality for the first time in years. It was a dark time in those years that I lived in LA and something about being in my hometown with a clear head felt like a second chance with everything and everyone, including myself and music.

Q – How would you describe your sound for those not hip to Gaston Light?

A - Ohhhh, genres. I find it difficult to hone in my music to a specific genre when people ask me, only because I know the sound of Gaston Light is ever changing. I would hope the listeners can grow with me into a different sound as my music progresses. But specifically for "Peel" if I had to roughly sum it up, it would be a spreadsheet of acoustically written songs dressed up with the sounds of both my country upbringing, my love for rock n roll and whatever that grey area is that lies in between that. And I tend to dwell in that "grey" area. I don't foresee Gaston Light making that "black and white album" but then again that could change too and THAT is what I love about writing. I have read about my music being branded in opposing extremes such as "garage-rock" to strictly "country." And personally, truth be told, I love both of those genres, and deem them both accurate descriptions knowing the album is seasoned with so many influences. At the end of the day my vision is to keep Gaston Light's sound as good ol' American Rock n Roll and have a fucking fun time doing it!

Q – I’ve heard a little of your new, debut album, “Peel.” Your music does a nice job of telling stories. What is your song writing process like? Is it based on an experience, someone you’ve met, etc.?

A - Thank you very much. My songwriting process really has no formula behind it. My songs can begin with a simple melody I hum to myself or an entire story/lyrics that I write months before I even pick up an instrument. Whichever way it may happen, my process requires time and effort. I find it necessary to work hard on every detail written in my songs; it's not a hobby, it's my job that I am humbled to have and therefore take very seriously. Like any craft, I want to only get better at it. As for the lyrics, I do tend to keep them rather autobiographical whether I intend to or not. Some are overtly personal like "Xanax Blues" or "Half Awake" where others I use characters, childhood flashbacks, or anything really. It’s funny, ya’ know, the first song on “Peel” is a song called "Athens, TX," a murder ballad written from the point of view of the killer. I myself did not commit such a crime (or did I?), ha ha, but I do relate to that character's sick desperation to extinguish this familiar object in fearing it would cause someone else the pain he had been dealt. It is an extreme exaggeration of the lengths someone will go to get rid of any reminders of what caused them that pain, even to the point of severe consequences. In saying this, even this script-like songwriting is not for sheer shock or attention, but is a personal experience exemplified in a fictional fashion and perhaps somewhat insane way. It still remains personal to me.

Q – “Peel” was recorded in only two weeks. Looking back at the album, are there things you wished you did differently and if so, what are they?

A - I wouldn't change anything as of now; you can drive yourself crazy even thinking about that and I have caught myself almost going there, don't get me wrong! I did a lot of prep work before recording these songs and was pretty intent capturing the sounds in my head. However, in the future, I predict I may utilize the studio to be a more influential voice in the songs. We'll see next album, if you don't hear from me for a while it may have been a bad idea. Follow the trail of ink-filled paper napkins with scribbled words to the nearest studio and you might find me.

Q – Are there songs on the album that mean more to you than others? Which song(s) should fans get excited about and why?

A - The songs’ relation to me (saying this having no experience in this area) is that each one on the album is a child to me. You don't want to pick favorites or at least you don't tell anyone if you do. I really enjoy playing "Crown" and " Radio King" in a live setting. "Kiss the Hive" is fun also. That being said, to any of my listeners, I do not pick favorites but I do throw those out there quite often.

Q – For the next two months you’re out playing dates across the country. Is there a town you like playing the most? A venue you’re looking forward to playing?

A - Chicago is always a good time! I look forward most to the dates in Kansas though, simply because I get to see a lot of my family outside of Dallas within a few days.

Cody Simpson Explodes From ‘Coast To Coast.’

Atlantic recording artist Cody Simpson has made a stunning chart debut with his new EP.  "COAST TO COAST" – which includes the #1 Radio Disney hit, "On My Mind" – entered the SoundScan/Billboard 200 at #12.  In addition, the Australian-born pop sensation has ascended to lucky #13 on Billboard's annual "21 Under 21" ranking, which noted that Simpson is "slowly becoming the all-encompassing pop phenom that could make him a household name by this time next year."

Simpson celebrated the release of "COAST TO COAST" with a number of high profile TV appearances, including visits to the Disney Channel's Prank Stars, QVC's Sunday Best, and the nationally syndicated Ellen DeGeneres Show (streaming now at Cody's official webpage, http://www.codysimpson.com/blog/26ed93-watch-cody-performs-on-the-ellen-degeneres-show).  He will be featured as MTV's Push Artist the Week beginning October 10th which will include the world premiere of  the "Not Just You"  video on MTV, MTV Hits and MTV.com on October 11th.

An array of further guest shots are set for the coming weeks, including Nickelodeon's Bucket & Skinner's Epic Adventures, ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, NBC's Progressive Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular and the nationally syndicated Live! with Regis & Kelly (slated for December 8th), as well as a performance and mentor role on Radio Disney and the Disney Channel's "N.B.T. (Next Big Thing)" talent contest (check local listings).  Simpson will also be among the top stars featured at Australian Nickelodeon's upcoming 2011 Kids Choice Awards, where he also received nominations in a trio of categories, including "Awesome Aussie," "Aussie Muso," and the prestigious "Super Fresh."

"COAST TO COAST" is highlighted by Cody's breakthrough U.S. hit, "On My Mind."  The track is a top 40 favorite at CHR/Pop radio outlets nationwide, having already hit #1 at Radio Disney (his second chart-topper at the network).  What's more, the "On My Mind" companion video – directed by Travis Kopach (Panic! At The Disco, 3OH!3, Boys Like Girls) – is a certified YouTube blockbuster with over 7 million views and counting at Cody's official YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/user/CodySimpsonMusic.

With over 1.3 million Twitter followers, over 1.7 million Facebook likes and nearly 89 million YouTube views, Simpson is already a genuine phenomenon.  He has toured nearly non-stop in recent months, including a sold out co-headline tour with Greyson Chance, shows alongside Miranda Cosgrove, and appearances at such events as Arthur Ashe Kids Day festivities at the 2011 U.S. Open.  Cody's own "COAST TO COAST Tour" of U.S. malls – presented by Pastry and co-sponsored by Claire's and Defeat The Label – drew huge crowds throughout the summer, with more than 3,000 fans turning out at each of its 10 stops to see the rising teen star in action.

Jonny Lives! celebrates release of sophomore full-length, 'Revolution For Free.'

From its humble beginnings as a super indie record being written and demo'd in a three-thousand square foot macadamia nut factory in Hawai'i - complete with chickens and power tools in the background - to its completion, New York-based rock 'n' roll band Jonny Lives!'s sophomore full-length, Revolution For Free has been an island-to-island journey which culminates in the release of the record via a joint venture between front man Jonny Dubowsky's own Rock 'N Renew Records and Los Angeles, CA-based indie Long Live Crime Records.

"When I started writing what would become [Revolution For Free], I was living up in the mountains of Hawai'i, and spending early mornings in the ocean and afternoons teaching students how to grow their own food. And, then, hopping on airplanes to travel to schools around the country to continue building a program that connects art, music, and environmental healing," details Dubowsky.  "That was obviously a very different scene than the 3am nights on Ave A, which is where I was spending time when I wrote our debut full-length."

Revolution For Free shows both growth in Dubowsky's lyricism and song writing abilities, expanding on the Brit-grit and Lower East Side rock their debut, Get Steady (Eleven Seven Music), and delivering a record chock-full of pop-hooks, melodic rock anthems, shimmering guitar tones, and a powerful rhythm section.

All this is very clear on Revolution For Free, an album that effortlessly moves from the classic AM pop of "Vagabond Lovers." The guitar-rock crunch of "It's Not Your Fault," and the swooning, slightly psychedelic pop-rock of "We Will Not Die Quietly," the last building and building until it ends with gorgeous vocal harmonies A cappella.

The band has already released a video for the album's first single, "If You Wanna Stay," which can be viewed on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4wQA8HXFjw

Other album highlights include the garage-rock of "Don't Throw It Away," the hook-laden, Beatles-esque raved-up "Your Money Or Your Life," or the could-have-been '90s radio hit vibe of "Parking Lot."

Jonny Lives! pulls no punches with Revolution For Free, speaking out for peace and the environment, all while never losing sight of having fun, crafting sing-along melodies, and writing pop songs that make the listener want to smile.

"In the title track, and across the entire record, I'm talking about the kind of revolution that we had in the 60s with the civil rights movement, an awakening that we can demand certain things, certain human rights," explains Dubowsky.  "A quality of life. For me, music has always been the soundtrack to that process.  There's definitely a story across this record of someone waking up to their power to change things for the better."

In the mid 2000's, during 25,000 plus mile touring schedules, Dubowsky started thinking about how to be more environmentally sustainable, while on the road. This got him researching how to pull it off for the band, and led to him realizing awareness wasn't as high as it should be.

His solution: blend music and environmentalism, two of his passions, and thus Rock 'n Renew was born.

Jonny Lives! began fueling their touring vehicle with bio-diesel and even waste-veggie-oil (French-fry grease) and also began pulling up to schools in each city to teach students about sustainability before each show. Gaining the support of Debbie Harry, Art Alexakis from Everclear, Kal Penn (Harold and Kumar, House), Fountains Of Wayne, Modest Mouse, The Kaiser Chiefs, and many other artists, Dubowsky suddenly had a huge platform to work on making environmental restoration programs as cool as the bands on Rock 'n Renew's roster.

From this initial phase, Rock 'n Renew has grown into a multi-faceted non-profit organization with the resources and connections to make real environmental change happen. It is also still a major part of each and every Jonny Lives! show. Rock 'n Renew has programs in over thirty cities and has helped over 100,000 students and their communities to restore their local ecosystem.

Moving back to New York City, Dubowsky finished up the album while on the road for his non-profit, Rock 'n Renew.  The drums were tracked in New York City, while other Jonny Lives! band members and special guests tracked parts in L.A., Australia, and Seattle.

"I was involved in every single aspect of this record, from start to finish," proclaims Dubowsky.  "I co-produced the record with friends Brian Boland [the original bassist for Jonny Lives!] and Danny Madorsky [who has worked with Blues Explosion, Chris Whitley, The Bogmen, and Luscious Jackson], with Boland and Madorsky splitting the mixing duties on the record."

B.o.B Soars To The Top Of The iTunes Chart With ‘Strange Clouds.’

Rebel Rock/Grand Hustle/Atlantic recording artist B.o.B proudly announces that his new single, “Strange Clouds,” which features rapper Lil Wayne, has topped both of iTunes’ Hip-Hop/R&B and Top Songs charts, only 2 days after it was released to the digital music retailer; listen to “Strange Clouds” here. The Dr. Luke-produced song, set to impact Urban and Rhythmic radio on November 15th, is the title track from the Atlanta rapper’s upcoming sophomore album of the same name. “STRANGE CLOUDS” is the follow-up to B.o.B’s critically-acclaimed, RIAA-certified Gold debut album, “B.o.B PRESENTS: THE ADVENTURES OF BOBBY RAY,” which earned an outstanding five Grammy nominations including “Best Rap Album.” The album also spawned three multiplatinum singles, “Nothin’ On You (feat. Bruno Mars),” “Magic (feat. Rivers Cuomo),” and “Airplanes (feat. Hayley Williams of Paramore)” the latter being certified 4X Platinum by the RIAA.

As if all this weren’t enough, this past Monday saw B.o.B being called on by President Obama to headline his re-election fundraiser at Los Angeles’ famed House of Blues, making this the second time the rapper has performed for the President, after performing at the GEN44 Summit last September at the White House. What’s more, B.o.B has also been nominated for “Best Mixtape” at this year’s BET Hip Hop Awards for his mixtape “NO GENRE.” In addition to all this, the rapper, who BET.com named “One To Watch” in 2010, was also recently named the face of AKOO’s Fall 2011 campaign, the clothing line founded by rap sensation T.I.

All this excitement comes after an incredible year, which saw the superstar taking the stage at the 2011 Grammy Awards alongside labelmates, and fellow collaborators, Bruno Mars and Janelle Monae for a medley performance that was undeniably one of the greatest moments of the night. In addition to joining both Lupe Fiasco’s “Steppin’ Laser Tour” and Rihanna’s North American “LOUD Tour,” B.o.B also embarked on his first headlining, international “Shootin’ For Stars World Tour.”

“B.o.B PRESENTS: THE ADVENTURES OF BOBBY RAY,” debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart and was heralded by the smash debut single “Nothin’ On You (feat. Bruno Mars),” which catapulted to the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. B.o.B also celebrated the album’s release with a number of high-profiled TV appearances including The Ellen Degeneres Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Wendy Williams Show, Saturday Night Live and The Mo’Nique Show, while gracing the covers of national publications including Complex and VIBE. Adding to this, B.o.B is one of the faces of Adidas’ 2011 “All Adidas” global brand campaign, which also includes the likes of Katy Perry, David Beckham and NBA star Derrick Rose.

B.o.B is currently in the studio working on his sophomore album, slated for a Spring 2012 release.

Theo Von's Reality Check. - Interview

Ten years ago, Theo Von couldn't walk into a bar without someone recognizing him from MTV's Road Rules. Interesting twist on an old punch line: "A man can't walk into a bar."

It was a bar that actually started it all for Von - he auditioned for Road Rules at a college bar at Louisiana State University. And that show changed everything.

"It was some of the best times of my life," Von said about his time on Road Rules (and subsequent MTV spinoffs). "[I] traveled the U.S. and the world, doing insane things, meeting loads of chicks. Being young."

Von was 20 when he was cast, right about the same time he started doing standup. Unlike many reality stars who try standup as a last gasp for fame before their candle burns out, Von's intention was to become a comedian, and Reality TV was just a fun way to spend a few years.

When it came to a career in standup, reality TV didn't always help Von. In 2005 and 2006, I toured colleges with Von as part of "The Immature Tour." Myself, Von, Adam Hunter, and Dan Levy were in our mid-twenties at the time, and Levy, Hunter and I had no real TV credits behind us. But most of the crowds had heard of Von, even though they didn't know he was a comedian. Many nights I watched Von have to overcome expectations inadvertently created by his edited reality persona while crowds adjusted to him being a standup.

"It doesn't matter who you are when you get on that stage, you have to do your act," Von said. "Comedy is comedy."

And while Road Rules gave Von the boost (and the money) it takes to jump start a career as a comic, it was Von's talent that prevented him from going down the road to has-been traveled by so many of his cast mates.

Von's first taste of comedy came while still in college, during a semester at sea. The boat had been at sea for 11 days and the cafeteria was still serving fresh milk. "We haven't seen land in 11 days, milk would have spoiled," Von remembers saying. "What are we milking? Who are we milking?"

It was Von's bizarre take on the mundane and instant likability that ironically led him away from reality TV - to more reality television in 2006, this time on Last Comic Standing. Voted back on as a crowd favorite, Von received major exposure, but this time for his comedy.

His material landed him a spot on Live at Gotham in 2008. Soon after, he performed for ten nights in a row to 1500 people in Johannesburg. And this December, he'll be taping his first special for Comedy Central. Theo Von the comedian is long out of the shadow previously cast by Theo Von the reality star.

"I may have gotten my fill during those years," Von said.

Oddly enough, Von still owes some of his recent success to reality - but a different kind. His website, Cranktexts.com, has exploded in popularity, broadening his fan base significantly. Though while he's doing the prank texting, no one knows it is him.

So for the first time in ten years, Von can have a bit of anonymity. Until his special airs.

Nancy Grace and Other Celebrity Nip Slips Help Bring Attention to Shows and Celebrities.

The latest victim to suffer through an embarrassing nip slip is legal correspondent Nancy Grace. The nip slip occurred on the reality show, "Dancing With the Stars."

As you know, "DWTS" has seen a lot of controversy, stemming back to the participation of Chaz Bono, the son of Sonny Bono and Cher, who went through a gender change operation.

Christian groups took to the Internet to display their disgust with Bono's participation. How they will feel in regard to Grace's nip slip is unknown.

Like all nip slips, Grace's faux paux was covered beautifully by ABC's production crew, whose cameras quickly cut away to the audience. During the cut away, the famous attorney turned legal correspondent adjusted her dress and hid her face in embarrassment in her partner, Tristan MacManus,' shoulder.

Michael Malone’s ‘Let Get Physical’ Could Be Better. – Comedy Review

When you hear a comedian describe themselves as ‘high energy’, what’s your first thought? Does Dane Cook immediately come to mind? Do you think of Carrot Top or Gallagher? Maybe your Uncle Tim and his wacky family reunion routine? What all of these folks have in common (even though I don’t know your Uncle Tim personally but I’m sure he’s a nice guy,) is the inability to grasp key comedy concepts. The main concept is to be original.

Michael Malone, a comedian who has been seen on Last Comic Standing and has been heard on The Bob and Tom Show, describes himself as ‘high energy’… and that’s true. However, he failed to mention that his jokes are culled from a Budd Friedman weekend comedy course. All of the bases are touched early on- airplanes, women and their irrational fears, black folks being smooth, all things gay and of course those crazy Mexican airline pilots.

Comedy has seen the tides turn in recent years. Things are more cerebral and more absurd and there are comedians out there who are choosing to actually like their audiences and want to treat them as if they have smarts and common sense. Malone doesn’t seem to subscribe to these concepts and that’s a shame. He has good timing and seems to be able to control a crowd and pull a few laughs here and there but he’s choosing to stay in the late 80’s/early 90’s school of what’s funny.

There’s a bit where Malone talks about looking like ‘the biggest homo in the world’ when referring to a secret his mother shared with him to avoid grabbing the wrong bag at the airport. Now, politically correct language should always go out the window when it comes to comedy but his execution of the joke comes off as pure bigotry.

Beyond that, the album was recorded in Alabama and it felt as though Malone believed most of them to be yokels. They came to see your show, man. It’s far too easy to go with geographical stereotypes and it’s an age old, hackneyed move. You want to make comedy your life, accept the fact that there are going to be all kinds of folks in your audience.

Comedy is subjective and it’s important to the listener to keep that in mind. It can also be considered an art form. So when you hear something that’s not only offensive but something that’s archaic, it makes you a little angry. Malone, not just as a comedian but as a human being, could do better.

I Am the Avalanche's 'Avalanche United' Out Oct 11.

Brooklyn's beloved punk rock crew I Am the Avalanche have announced their long awaited return with one of the most anticipated albums in years, Avalanche United, due out October 11.  The band has premiered the album's first track, "Holy Fuck," today at: http://www.rocksound.tv/features/article/exclusive-first-play-i-am-the-avalanche.

Avalanche United is the album I Am the Avalanche and their fans have been waiting on for over six years. The title "Avalanche United" also embodies the resilient spirit of this band, and their deep bonds with their families, friends and fans who have supported and sustained I Am The Avalanche through thick and thin.

"This band has a nervous energy, an urgency that each of us feel every second of our lives, and this album captures that," says vocalist Vinnie Caruana.  "We're brothers, we're family.  The music we make together binds us together and gets us through all the hard times, together.  I feel like all five of us will be able walk with less weight on our shoulders now that we've finished this album after years of writing and recording.  And now it's time to perform these songs everywhere, alongside some of my best friends."

Produced by the band, and executive produced and engineered by their prolific drummer Brett "The Ratt" Romnes and mixed by Machine (Fall Out Boy, Every Time I Die, Four Year Strong), Avalanche United is addictively melodic and blisteringly raw to its very core.

Featuring 12 anthemic songs and absolutely zero filler, the album includes "Brooklyn Dodgers," the defiant "Holy Fuck", the epic and somber "Dead Friends" and "The Gravedigger's Argument," featuring Anthony Raneri from Bayside. Throughout, Caruana's distinctive voice drips with defiance, humor and proud vulnerability as he sings about hope, heartbreak, death, defying adversity and the bonds between family, lovers and friends.  Just seconds into your first listen of Avalanche United and it'll be immediately clear that I Am the Avalanche are back with one of punk's most powerful albums in years, unbroken and unbowed.

Why Do People Still Fly Southwest? Camila Grey and Leisha Hailey Discriminated Against, Release Statement

I plan on never flying Southwest Airlines again. My hatred for the airline started last year with the way they handled the Kevin Smith situation. Yeah, maybe he escalated the whole situation, but that doesn’t mean what they did was right. Now they’re discriminating against LGBT community. Musicians Camila Grey and Leisha Hailey kissed on the flight and were reprimanded by a flight attendant scolded them saying that ‘Southwest Airlines was a family oriented airline.’

Now, yes if they or any two people (not just of the same sex) were excessively making out on an airplane then I could see the point. However, from my understanding, and I was not there, it was just one small kiss, probably just lips to lips. The ladies released a statement, not an apology, but a statement taking responsibility for being verbally upset and their disappointment in Southwest, here it is:

‘We have always promoted tolerance, openness and equality both as a band and as individuals. We both come from loving homes where our parents not only love and accept us, but are also proud of who we are. We believe everyone has the right to live openly in this society as equals. In no way were our actions on Southwest Airlines excessive, inappropriate or vulgar. We want to make it clear we were not making out or creating any kind of spectacle of ourselves, it was one, modest kiss. We are responsible adult women who walk through the world with dignity. We were simply being affectionate like any normal couple. We were on the airplane less than 5 minutes when all was said and done. We take full responsibility for getting verbally upset with the flight attendant after being told it was a “family airline.” We were never told the reason the flight attendant approached us, we were only scolded that we “needed to be aware that Southwest Airlines was a family oriented airline.” No matter how quietly homophobia is whispered, it doesn’t make it any less loud. You can’t whisper hate. We ask this airline to teach their employees to not discriminate against any couple, ever, regardless of their own beliefs. We want to live in a society where if your loved one leans over to give you an innocent kiss on an airplane it's not labeled as "excessive or not family oriented" by a corporation and it’s employees. We find it very disturbing that the same airline who lauds itself as being LGBT friendly has twisted an upsetting incident that happened into our behavior being "too excessive." The above is not an apology and we are in the process of filing a formal complaint with the airline. We hope that when all is said and done a greater tolerance without prejudice will evolve.’

Risque Rihanna Video Shoot Shut Down by Farmer

I think this story is funny. Imagine you have a farm and somebody comes up to you and asks you if they can use your land to shoot a video. For all you know it’s just a couple of kids working on a class project with really nice equipment. You’re a conservative man, happily married to a wife of 30 or 40 years. You’re working your farm, but you keep an eye on what these crazy kids are doing on your land.

They’re filming a girl lip-syncing to music, she’s wearing a sweater. She’s kind of weird looking to you, but in a way kind of pretty at the same time. All of the sudden she’s filming in a bikini top. This starts to make you uncomfortable, but she’s covered up so you get back to your work only to turn around and see that her top has come off.

What do you do? Mind your business and get back to work? Do you call the person who contacted you about using your land for the shoot and shut the shoot down, or do you do what any good pervert would do and go down for a closer look, but then shut down the shoot to make it seem like you have good family friendly morals? This farmer did the third option of going in for a closer look…pervert.

I’m joking, I can respect someone standing up for their values and not allowing filth like this to take place on their land. Would I stop something like that? Probably not, but you’re talking about a guy who has Mr. Skin banners up all over a site he works at. That said, I wish I were capable of having the moral compass to shut something like that down when my name is attached to something like that, but I don’t.

Guns n Roses Nominated for the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame

Look, the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is a piece of shit. It started as the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and quickly became the pop music Hall of Fame. Obviously Madonna and Michael Jackson have had a huge influence in the music world, but not really in the Rock n Roll world. The RnR Hall of Fame doesn’t know what it wants to be and as long as at least Kiss isn’t in, it’s garbage. I’m not the worldest biggest Kiss fans, but they’re one of the biggest most influential rock band ever, how do you not put them in?

If I had my way there would be several other bands in, Rush, Yes, Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, Ozzy Osbourne, Motley Cure, Bon Jovi and I could go on and on, but I’ll stop. What is exciting though is that Guns n Roses is up for the Rock Hall. I don’t know that they are sure to get in, but they eventually will. You would think they’d get right in, but Bon Jovi didn’t get in and you’d think the Hall voters are more into bands like Bon Jovi than Guns n Roses, but we’ll see.

What’s exciting is that a while back Slash said that if there were ever to be a GnR reunion it would be at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, because he doesn’t want to do what Van Halen did which was disappointing to the fans. However there are four other guys you need to get on board. We all know Steven Adler is already in, Duff would probably do it. Izzy would probably show up, but what about Axl? They’re not being inducted because of “Chinese Democracy.” They’re not even being inducted because of the “Use Your Illusions” albums. If they get inducted it’ll be because of “The Spaghetti Incident” “Appetite for Destruction.”

Would Axl be willing to reunite with the guys, even if for just one night? My guess is that they’ll get in, but only because the Rock Hall wants to see what’ll happen. I bet the guys in GNR are hoping they don’t get in for another 5 or 10 years.
The other nominees include:
Beastie Boys
The Cure
Donovan
Eric B. & Rakim
Guns 'N Roses
Heart
Joan Jett and The Blackhearts
Freddie King
Laura Nyro
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Rufus with Chaka Khan
The Small Faces/The Faces
The Spinners
Donna Summer
War

A Review of Stitched Up Heart’s ‘Escape the Nightmare.’

Stitched Up Heart's "Escape the Nightmare" combines today's pop/punk/rock with yesterday's hair metal in the sense that guitar solos and punchy rock riffs complement the vocals of the dazzling Alecia Mixi Demner. Demner is one part Ashley Costello of New Years Day, one part Nina Diaz of Girl in a Coma and one part screaming eighties vocal goddess.

The six song EP with tracks titled, "These Scars Will Let Me Breathe," "We're Alive" and "Change," is a fun collection of everything that is great in music. Each song is its own gem fused together by the band's synergy. Today's musical landscape forces bands to be pop stars or Avenged Sevenfold in a way a lot of bands are taking the independent road to get their music out. Stitched Up Heart is one of those bands that does things their own way.

My favorite song is "Dead Walkin.'" It is the best example of how good Stitched Up Heart really is. Although the entire EP is rock solid, Demner's voice throughout this song works melodiously with the music. It's like a magic trick that can't be explained.

Stitched Up Heart recently concluded a tour with Gemini Syndrome and Evolove. I chatted with Demner and what surprised me was that Stitched Up Heart had just gotten together (2010) as a band. Getting together and then instantly hitting the road on tour tells you how special this band is.

Look for great things from Stitched Up Heart; hopefully a full-length album is in the works. In the song, "These Scars Will Let Me Breathe," Demner confesses that she wants to be "the girl of your dreams." It's safe to say Alecia Mixi Demner is the girl of everyone's dreams.

Byron Nemeth To Pay Tribute To Jimi Hendrix.

Scottsdale, AZ based guitar hero, Byron Nemeth, plans to commemorate Jimi Hendrix's burial date of Oct. 1 1970 during his appearance at LA Amp Show Oct. 1 and 2.

Nemeth will be heading to the roof of the Airtel Plaza Hotel at approximately 4:20 pm to play The Star Spangled Banner as performed by Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock and to light a guitar on fire in Hendrix memory. ""Honoring Hendrix by replicating his very controversial rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner on electric guitar is the most important political rock statement that needs to be done today to wake people up to new music," says Nemeth. "This delivery of screaming guitar and ballistic feedback will shock and inspire listeners to a new vision of what modern rock should be instead of the watered down corporate drivel we have been forced feed in recent years."

Byron will be representing Moore Amps and the company's new model Mooresound 1013 Amp Class A 20 Watt Single Channel All Tube Amplifier throughout the weekend.

Do Taylor Lautner, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart Even Need 'Twilight' Anymore?

Taylor Lautner is once again a single man. The "Twilight" star recently split with girlfriend and co-star of "Abduction" Lily Collins in a "clean break that Taylor initiated." The story was reported by Hollywood.com at the heels of the film's premiere. "But this may not have been the right time to make such a decision because apparently there was a little tension and awkwardness on the red carpet and at the after party."

However, the awkwardness of the break up will soon be a moot point when Lautner's other film, the hugely popular and lucrative "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1," rolls into theaters on November 18, 2011.

Lautner will then be joined by Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, and once again all will be right with the world. Team Jacob, Team Edward and the fight for Bella will sweep the nation as millions of fans will flock to the theaters to see the culmination of the "Twilight" series that has opened doors for actors like Lautner and Pattinson.

Once a series ends, actors made famous often times disappear off the Hollywood map. Some go on to do other things while others are haunted by the typecast of being one particular character. However, in the case of Lautner, Pattinson and Stewart, each has shed his or her image of "Twilight" and has become a great actor. This begs the question; do these three actors even need "Twilight" anymore?

KYNG’S ‘Trampled Sun’ Debut Album Out Today On REALID Records/ILG.

The time has come.  TRAMPLED SUN, the highly anticipated debut album by Southern California's KYNG--singer/songwriter/guitarist Eddie Veliz, bassist Tony Castaneda and drummer Pepe Clarke Magaña—was released today on REALID Records (through Warner Music Group's Independent Label Group).  The album's first two singles, "Falling Down" and "Trails in Veins," were mixed by Mike Watts (Adelita's Way, Hopesfall, Quicksand, Brand New).

"Falling Down" recently debuted on the BDS Active Rock chart at #38 and is in heavy rotation on SiriusXM's "Octane" channel, while "Trails In Veins" can be heard on the "Liquid Metal" channel, thanks to the support of Program Director Jose Mangin, who has championed KYNG since hearing early demos a couple of years ago, some of which were played on "Octane" before TRAMPLED SUN was even in the works.  SiriusXM was instrumental in bringing the band to what became their record label (REALID/ILG) and managers (In De Goot, who also represents Shinedown, Chevelle and others).

KYNG's self-proclaimed "California Heavy" sound is a unique and universally appealing combination of heavy and captivating concepts, channeling influences from Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin to Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age.

Before KYNG was a glimmer in the trio's eyes, bassist Tony Castaneda and drummer Pepe Clarke Magaña were members of the Latino metal band Ankla, which toured across the U.S. with bands such as Ill Nino, Nonpoint, In This Moment, and Hatebreed.  They were also a part of Ozzfest in 2007.

Now that the band has completed dates with Drowning Pool, Pop Evil and Egypt Central, the band is launching a two-week jaunt with Wayne Static and Eye Empire starting today.

9 LEFT DEAD’s Debut Album, ‘The Wrong Things,’ Out Today On Dirtbag/ILG.

THE WRONG THINGS by 9 LEFT DEAD--Travis Jones (vocals), Jared Ellis (bass), Kreg Anthony (lead guitar), Nathan Parrish (rhythm guitar) and Bryan Whitley (drums)—was released today through Dirtbag (through Warner Music Group's Independent Label Group).

The buzz for the Oklahoma band's debut album has been building thanks to early adds for the first single, "Put Your Guns Down," on radio stations nationwide, including KATT (in their hometown, Oklahoma City), WIIL (Chicago), WKLC (Charleston, WV), WJJO (Madison) and WRTT (Huntsville).

The song stems from an incident at an Oklahoma City prison, which is where singer Travis Jones and bassist Jared Ellis first met and worked together as guards.

As singer Travis Jones recently told AOL/Noisecreep.com, "One day we had an inmate come in thinking he was a little more hardcore than he actually ended up being.  I was having a bad night, and to add to it, this inmate kept running his mouth.  One thing lead to another and he ended up taking a swing at me. So I moved in on him, picked him up, and slammed him into the ground taking control of the situation.  Later on that night I was going back over what had just happened in my head and the line 'careful what you wish for' kept sticking in my head, because he wanted to fight, but I know he didn't see it playing out the way it actually did. And it made me think about those guys that think they are unstoppable until someone actually puts them in their place.  That's where the idea for 'Put Your Guns Down' came from."

With producers Cody Hanson and Marshal Dutton behind the boards for THE WRONG THINGS, the band has perfected the merging of their up-tempo, aggressive and pounding sound with melodic vocal hooks and identifiable lyrics that appeal to a broad audience.  With an unbreakable chemistry, 9 LEFT DEAD brings an action packed show every night leaving it all out there on the stage for the fans.

9 LEFT DEAD is starting to make their way across the U.S. with more tour dates to be announced in the coming weeks.

Machine Head’s Robb Flynn – Interview

The day before the The Big Four (Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax) took the stage at Yankee Stadium, I got to a chance to chat with Machine Head front man Robb Flynn about their new album “Unto the Locust” and his involvement with spreading the Big Four rumors. I got a chance to check out Machine Head this summer at the Mayhem Fesitval and night after night they were one of the stand out bands on the bill. I can’t wait to pick up “Unto the Locust.”

Zoiks!: Can you tell us about your new album “Unto the Locust?”

Robb Flynn: It is the logical follow up to “The Blackening,” but it is not “The Blackening II.” It’s definitely going…it’s part of the evolutionary chain of Machine Head records, but it’s still has all the things that you’ve grown to know and love about Machine Head. It’s got the patented harmonics, heavy vocals, fast, grooving.

Z!: How do you handle the pressures of following up such a successful album like “The Blackening?”

RF: We didn’t try to compare. When we started writing it was just a matter of, ‘where can we take this? Where can this go?’ ‘How can we challenge ourselves and push ourselves as musicians?’ When we wrote “The Blackening it was 2005 into 2006. When we wrote this album it was four years later. When we wrote “The Blackening,” that was the threshold of our abilities and we went and toured that record for three years. What was at one point the threshold became the new normal. So we became better players and better as a band. We took that and tried to utilize that more.

Z!: The early indications is that “Unto the Locust” is that its going to be a pretty big album for you guys, what was different about the writing and recording process this time around?

RF: Not much. I’d love to sit hear and tell you that when we write these grandiose epic records that we’ve got this big vision (laughs), but when we’re in the studio it’s just very “Beavis and Butthead.” ‘Hey what do you think of this riff?’ ‘That’s cool, what do you think of this?’ ‘It’s ok.’ It’s very much like that. We just write until we feel like we have a good collection of songs. I think the main thing for us is that the four of us get goose bumps. We’re not writing for fans, we’re not writing for radio, we’re not writing for what we think people might want. We’re just writing for ourselves and we feel that’s the truest most honest gauge that there can be.

Z!: When you’re making an album, what point do you realize you have something special?

RF: I think it differs from album to album. But with this record, even from the first song that was finished we knew we had something special. The first song that was done was “This is the End.” We knew we had something different, something special, and something very unique and that was inspiring. It was really inspiring to have such a strong start and that helped spread into the rest of the work.

Z!: You have some listening events coming up can you tell us a little bit about those and how they came to be?

RF: There are listening events going on all over the world in the UK, Germany, Japan and Australia, we thought it might be cool to do some here. Being that we just wrapped up touring in America we weren’t going to necessarily be touring right at release. We hadn’t done some in awhile, but last time we did some was around “Through the Ashes” and that was 8 years ago, so we were like lets do it. We will be attending them, but I just want to clarify that we will not be performing there. We will be drinking (laughing) and the record will be playing, we’ll be hanging and everybody can hear it for the first time. They’re all going to be a bit different. Some of them will be having a Machine Head karaoke contest where kids can compete against each other to win bundles or a cd or shirts. It’ll be killer man, we’re really excited. We’ve done the karaoke thing in the past and it’s fucking awesome. Kids just go out there and kill it, it’s fun.

Z!: How was the Mayhem tour with Megadeth, Godsmack and Disturbed?

RF: Amazing.

Z!: Did you get a chance to play any of the new songs live?

RF: We did, we debuted “Locust.”

Z!: How was the fan reaction?

RF: It was great man. The whole tour was great. I literally have nothing bad to say about it. It’s the type of thing that you didn’t want to end.

Z!: You heading out to South America for the first time in a long time with Sepultura, how excited are you?

RF: Super excited, we played Argentina one time, but we’ve never been to Brazil, we’ve never been to Chile. To go out and have Sepultura co headline with us and let us close is amazing. It’s huge. It’s killer, we’re really stoked. The response to the tour has been phenomenal; we’re very much looking forward to it. I’ve seen so many of the Rock in Rio’s with Rush and the Maiden thing…I’ve just heard so many amazing thing about it, I can’t wait.

Z!: How did that opportunity come about?

RF: When I was at NAMM, I went to see Sepultura play. We’ve never toured with Sepultura before, but we knew the guys. Obviously they were a huge influence to us. They were one of the main reasons that we wanted to sign with Road Runner. We felt whoever Sepultura was with they knew what they were doing. I was just talking to Andreas (Kisser) at the show and it was kind of like, ‘we should tour man.’ They were getting ready to release their record, we hadn’t been there, it was a great opportunity to get together. They were like, ‘you guys can headline, and it’ll be fucking awesome.’

Z!: After that you have the Eighth Plague Tour, can you tell us a little bit about that tour?

RF: It’s Machine Head, Bring Me the Horizon, Devildriver, and Darkest Hour. We’ll be doing arenas across Europe and the UK. We’re playing Wembley Arena for the first time which we’re fucking so stoked about, it’s awesome. It’s our first headlining tour in awhile over there. Just to be doing it on such a huge scale is a huge moment for us and we’re really proud and feel very grateful that we’ve had so many awesome opportunities to do this kind of stuff.

Z!: Are the crowds different around the world compared to here in the states?

RF: There are little differences here and there, but over all I think metal heads are…. they’re the runts of the litter. They tend to have some problems, dysfunctional home life or whatever. We all as band members, we can all identify with that, that’s where we all came from too. It definitely seems like that is a common bond that everybody shares.

Z!: When the Big 4 Shows were just a rumor, Kerry King mentioned that he thought Machine Head should be apart of it, what was your reaction to that?

RF: I was blown away when he said that. I don’t know if we felt like we should be involved, those were the classic bands. Those were the bands that we looked up to. For my part, being on tour with Metallica, it was cool to play this little role in putting that all together. I kept on asking Lars (Ulrich), ‘how come Metallica and Slayer have never toured together, you guys should tour,’ we’d be all hammered. Then in LA, I introduced Kerry and Lars and said, ‘hey man you guys should tour together.’ I kept on sprinkling some seeds. I didn’t play any big role in it or anything, I was just sprinkling seeds here and there…watered it a little bit. To see it finally happen was just incredible, it’s such a cool thing.

Z!: If you could put together your own little Big 4, what bands would be on the bill?

RF: Fuck man, tomorrow is going to be pretty fucking close…it’s going to be pretty fucking killer.

Z!: I interviewed Korn awhile back and asked them when they were starting out, what band’s helped them get the word out and show them the ropes and they said Machine Head. Was there a band that was influential when you were first starting out that you learned from?

RF: Hmmm, I don’t know if we learned from them, but Biohazard, who was also on Road Runner at the time, definitely were big supporters of the band. They were really hot at the time, they had that video on “Beavis and Butthead.” They really backed the band, even from before, I was seeing them open for The Exploited like super hard core punk rock shows, We loved them. Sepultura I think gave us the thumbs, Napalm Death, Slayer…not getting us signed, but Slayer took us on tour.

Z!: What advice would you have for young bands out there trying to make a name for themselves?

RF: I don’t know if I’m qualified to give advice on this subject (laughs). I don’t know just be yourself. Do what you do, ultimately people can see if you’re not being true to yourself. The more true to yourself that you are and in tune with the music you make, the more it connects with people.
