Cali Swag District Brings the ‘Dougie’ With Its New Album, ‘The Kickback.’ - Interview

“Teach Me How To Dougie” was a radio hit for the band Cali Swag District. The album, “The Kickback” drops July 12, 2011 worldwide. The band’s Smoove recently stopped by to talk about the new album, the Dougie and the loss of their friend, M-bone.

Q – The song, “Teach Me How To Dougie,” peaked at number 28 on the Billboard Top 100 and was viewed more than 100 million times on YouTube. What did the success of this single do for the band? I mean, the album hasn’t even come out yet.

A - The success level of “Teach Me How To Dougie” took us to another level and made us go from local to global in a rapid matter of time. It opened many doors for us.

Q – The album, “The Kickback,” is now available for pre-order. With the success of “Teach Me How To Dougie,” what expectations are there for the album?

A - We expect for the album to do good, but believe the sales will increase by word of mouth. Meaning once people begin to talk about the album, more people will buy it.

Q – If the album doesn’t do as well as the single, will you consider it a failure?

A - If the album sales don't do so well we won't consider it a fail because of the hard work and time we put into it. No matter what people say, we believe it's a great album.

Q – The song, “Teach Me How To Dougie” inspired a nation to dance the Dougie. Everyone seemed to have their own version of it, including the First Lady, Michelle Obama. How does it feel knowing the First Lady has her own version of the Dougie?

A - Knowing that the First Lady did the Dougie let us know that this dance/song will go down in history as one of the biggest songs ever.

Q – The band suffered a loss with the murder of M-bone. How did this event change the lives and focus of the band?

A - Losing M-bone changed things a great deal because he was the spark we needed on stage. He was the life of the party, so now it's up to us to keep that same energy he always gave. Now we are forced to work harder than ever just to keep M-bone’s legacy alive.

Q – The album officially drops July 12th. Will there be a corresponding tour with the release?

A - Tour I'm not sure about yet, but there are definitely some things that the label is working on. I know we'll be everywhere promoting the album and still doing shows for sure.

Q – I know you’ll never get over the fact that M-bone is gone but will this album and tour be a dedication to your friend or is his death something the band wants to keep private?

A - We pay a tribute to M-bone in every show and that will never change. We can't keep his death private; it's already known across the nation.

Q – Thanks for taking the time. Good luck with the album. Is there anything you wanted to add?

A - Fans will be pleasantly surprised with the album!
