"'American Idol' Adam Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry and Clay Aiken are Top Ten Idols."

With “American Idol” starting back up on Wednesday with new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez, I felt that now was a good time to reminisce on some of “Idols” best contestants to date. I look forward to hear your opinions, but keep in mind that this list is very subjective. I haven’t watched the show since day one and quite frankly I don’t really even like the show. However, as a fan of music there have been moments that have stood out for me.

10. Carly Smithson – Currently Carly is the front woman for the rock band We Are the Fallen. Smithson is one of “Idols” best rock vocalists, unfortunately for her not many fans of rock music watch the show and there weren’t a lot of great rock songs to choose from. She had some stand out performances that included “Come Together,” “Blackbird” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.” “Jesus Christ Superstar” was probably her most memorable performance and I’m pretty sure she was sent packing right after nailing it. Oh well, now she’s with a pretty cool band. You should check them out.

9. David Cook – You’d think he’d be higher on my list, but Cook pretty much just took over where Chris Daughtry left off. Cook and Daughtry are both perfect examples of why rock music is the best music. They’re not overly rock guys, but they are fans of rock music and they’re aware of somewhat obscure covers of classic songs. For instance, David Cook’s take on Chris Cornell’s take on Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.” While Ryan Seacrest did give Chris Cornell credit on the show, the judges acted as if Cook arranged it himself. That said, it was pretty cool to see David Cook bring somewhat obscure covers to the mainstream like he did.

8. Fantasia – I didn’t watch Fantasia’s season, but I did see the finale and how could you not watch her singing her victory song without some what getting a tear in your eye. Ok never mind, I didn’t get teary eyed watching her sing, but Fantasia’s final performance was why the show “American Idol” was created and that was to give an amateur a chance to be more than that. It’s something the show lost hold of and probably will never be able to get back.

7. Clay Aiken – Aiken deserves a lot of credit for the over all success of “American Idol.” Kelly Clarkson laid the ground work and Rueben and Clay took full advantage. While Clay is a great talent he’s kind of become a reality star character. He’ll always be somewhat famous, regardless of a musical career kind of in the same way Omarosa, Trishelle and all those other reality stars stay famous.

6. Chris Daughtry – The second biggest screw job in the history of “American Idol” went to Chris Daughtry. Never has a contestant up and down beat up on everybody week after week and not made it into the final two. Who cares if you win or lose, at the very least you should be in the top two. Daughtry paved the way guys like David Cook and Adam Lambert. While Cook and Lambert are totally different from each other and Daughtry, Daughtry was one of the first to bring a cover version of a song to the “American Idol” audience and he did it a couple of different times. What he is probably best remembered for on the show was his version of Fuel’s “Brain Hemorrhage.” It was so amazing that Fuel actually asked him to join the band.

5. Adam Lambert – Oh my God why isn’t Adam Lambert number one? Our site has kind of become an Adam Lambert site. Listen I love Adam Lambert, but he ruined “American Idol,” so it’s hard to put him at the top of the list. How did he ruin “American Idol?” He turned it from a very amateur show to this over the top Madonna meets Kiss type thing and it was amazing, but the show is not capable of following that up. So you can blame Adam Lambert for the fall of “American Idol.”

4. Bo Bice – Bo Bice was the single reason I got into “Idol” in the first place. He introduced rock music into “Idol” and it was legit rock music too, not the crap that Daughtry and Cook later brought to the show. He was doing the Allman Brothers, Skynrd, the Stones, but what he was probably most remembered for was either his version of “Vehicle” by the Ides of March or the a capella version of Badlands “In a Dream.” Bice kicked Underwoods ass up and down the competition, but it’s hard to argue against her post “Idol” success.

3. Jennifer Hudson – Hudson is probably the greatest talent to even take the “Idol” stage and went home way to early. She is the perfect example of how stupid most of the “American Idol” audience is…but I didn’t vote for her, so I guess I’m to blame too. She’s made quite the career for herself, so I don’t think the Oscar winning Hudson is feeling too sorry for herself.

2. Carrie Underwood – I mentioned above that Bice kicked Underwood’s ass up and down the competition, but the truth is the two of them dominated all season long. It was probably the greatest cast of “American Idol” as well. Underwood has gone on to amazing success. Her success is so big that you almost don’t associate “American Idol” with her name any more. Carrie Underwood has become a large than life star and because of “American Idol” we love her that much more.

1. Kelly Clarkson – Look, if Clarkson had come out and bombed the show probably would have fizzled away. By Kelly Clarkson not only winning in a memorable show but going to on to become a legitimate pop star, she validated what the show could do. For that reason alone, Clarkson is number one on my list of “American Idols.”

Interesting take on the idols. the only one I don't agree on is fantasia (sorry worst idol for me and I've never missed an episode). Of course, I'll be forever grateful to AI for bringing us the one and only Adam Lambert. He is in a different leaque than all of them put together and is and always will be #1 (IMO) What I do agree on is he ruined the show from now on!

Anonymous said...

Adam Lambert #1 for me. Everything else is meaningless to me.

Anonymous said...

That is my sentiment. Adam Lambert's excellence ruined Idol forever no one will ever come close. I am happy that because of Idol he came into our lives.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the comment, Adam Lambert ruined the show because he set the bar so high that no one can reach it. There will be never anyone as good as Adam Lambert. I still watch the show to see how they look in comparison to Adam and I feel sorry for the contestants because they will be compared with Adam from now on.

I actually agree with your list, if not the order. Overall, everyone on that list has been a positive addition to popular music in one way or another, and I'm grateful to Idol for bringing them to us. I love that you included Bo. He's so often overlooked - and your assessment was dead on.

Anonymous said...

Love, love, love Clay Aiken!! One of the best voices of our time.

Anonymous said...

Kelly definitely deserves #1. She was the original Idol and proved that the show's PTB and audience could pick a winner. Sadly, the show has gone downhill since then in terms of its ability to pick winners. Adam Lambert was both the high point and the low point of the show. HIgh point in that it's doubtful another singer will ever equal, let alone surpass, his vocals or his stage charisma and that it brought him to fame. Low point in that he did not win and based upon his much greater success in comparison to the winner, it's not because the public preferred the winner's MUSIC. So Lambert both broke the show in terms of finding anyone to equal him AND continued Daughtry's start of making the show's results utterly irrelevant.

Anonymous said...

I can agree with everyone on the list except Fantasia. I just can't handle watching her on stage. She is just to manic in her performances for me!!

Anonymous said...

This show was a snooze-fest until Adam Lambert came along and this milk-toast country picked a milk-toast for a winner. May this show go down the tubes already!

Anonymous said...

No hostility, just confusion:
So, let me get this straight, you are blaming Adam's talent and charisma for not being #1 on your poll. It's a little odd, but just like the rest of America, you are rewarding mediocrity. THAT BEING SAID, Adam has moved beyond American Idol, so that is okay. By the way, you can make your convoluted logic up to Adam by:

LOL..you caught me!!!When I was starting to look for dam and saw him at spot Nr.5 I thought "What the hell.."..and you finished my sentence with your "isnt he Nr 1"..
After reading your explination I can nothing but agree that he killed A.I. !!!!
BUT he still deserves to be Nr 1 cause you were looking for the best Idol ever and thats Adam without any doubts!!!!NOBODY took off with his career as sucessfull as he in such a little time.

Anonymous said...

The defining moment for American Idol was the Season 2 Finale with Ruben and Clay...That episode still stands as the most viewed.... The next highest viewed was AI5, when Clay appeared. For me...no one has come close since.

Anonymous said...

Never got Fantasia, still don't. Liked the rest of your list. I agree with your Adam analogy, but in my mind he will always be number l. Carrie was made for Country music and think Bo Bice should have made it bigger.

Anonymous said...

Of course you can't argue Carrie's post idol success because she is famous and rich now. The truth is Bo was over rated as relected by his post idol disappearance. Sure his name is thrown out there once in a while but that's because his peeps haven't moved on with their lives yet, still hoping for that big break which isn't going to happen. This article was written by a peep as well I see.

I linked this article on Adamofficial.com. We are soooo bored over there now that Adam's Glam Nation tour is over. I know that Zoiks! is supposed to be humorous. I get it, but some of the Adam fans take these lists very seriously.

Adam did not 'ruin' American Idol as you say he did, he raised the bar!

Anonymous said...

I think the list is pretty solid, I may not agree with all your assessments of each individual. Take Adam, who I think he is an amazing performer. But his vast stage experience before the show gave him an edge that many contestants have not had. The comparsion may be unfair. That season the word "amateur" went out the window. This opinion is not meant to take away from his obvious talent!

I have to take issue with your comments about Clay. The man has recorded 5 albums, toured his butt off, does tireless charity work, was successful on Broadway, how would he just be considered a "reality character"?

Bob Zerull said...

You're right about Clay, but for those unaware he still is pretty famous as a reality character as well.

Anonymous said...

I honestly think all the idols are overrated for the simple fact that they are have PEAKED in terms of their original highest success. Kelly went from selling 6 million albums to not even selling one million. NOne of them are top artists, Carrie is on the country side (but even she isn't tat the top their anymore)but overall when you stack them up against the real artists even idols TOP artist Kelly and Carrie are way down on the list. Too bad they couldn't be CONSISTENT with their succcess like a Beyonce or a Taylor Swift. That's what a real superstar does. Consistency year after year, not one huge album and then tank.

Sam said...

David Cook is way too low on your list...I am sorry...Adam has not sold as many albums as Cook. Adam is just a male verision of Lady Gaga...nothing really that spectacular.

David is really awesome live and he is an amazing songwriter. He is currently working on his second album after his 1st went platinum, with two platinum singles and a gold single...plue, he had a sold out tour in 2009...he has been working on this album for over a year now and it is due to come out between March and May 2011...

Fantasia is also too high up on your list...her voice is like nails on a chalkboard...

Anonymous said...

i happen to think Clay is too low on your list everyone seems to forget his forst album went double platinum in a week and he had the highest selling single that year. His 2nd christmas album sold over two million copies. All his albums have hit the top 10 on the billboard charts and he won AMA award in 2003 and a couple of billboard awards over the next few years. Hardly a realty star. With all of this he still finds time to do much charity work ongoing. Opps forgot Broadway

Anonymous said...

Leave it to a Cook fan to come on and spew their typical negativity per usual. I'm looking at you Sam. What's up with you Cook people? What is your problem?

Anonymous said...

Bob Zurell is out of touch with reality. He thinks that a modest success like Adam Lambert is such a big deal and then totally under rates a multi million sucess that is a touring machine and a UNICEF Ambassador like Clay Aiken is just a reality star. Good god man. Do some research or you look like a moron.

Anonymous said...

Jennifer Hudson flopped as a recording artist which was the purpose of the show, to find a superstar. She never even sold a million CDs, and for the record neither did Adam Lambert.

TeliseGlam said...

Whoa!!I am a card carrying Adam Lambert fan and I already know he's going to go down in history as one of the most successful runners up in Idol history. He has unmatched vocal talent, charisma, and is the most exciting finalist to ever take the Idol stage! And how did Jennifer Hudson turn up as a "loser" on this comment board? Evidently it's coming from someone who has no clue about her genre. Jennifer Hudson is an AWESOME talent and the fact that she never made it to Season 3's Final 2 can be listed as yet another American Idol failure! She's gone on to win Grammy awards and an OSCAR! So she's never to be considered a failure or lackluster-that title should go to where it truly belongs. TPTB at American Idol! Same for Daughtry, who's gone on to unbelievable fame and fortune!

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the article, Bob Zerull!

Adam Lambert is my favourite artist. He will always be #1 for me!

Anonymous said...

I only agree with:
Kelly
Carrie
Chris Daughtry
David Cook
I would definitely add: Kris Allen
Real song writers, real musicians.

Absolutely despise: Aiken, Fantasia and Lambert - over-the-top Broadway acts.

Who the heck is Carly Smithton?

Anonymous said...

AI was a snooze fest until Adam Lambert was on that stage and the next season it went back to a snooze fest.

Bob Zerull said...

I hate Bob Zurell too, he is out of touch with reality, but what does he have to do with this post?

Anonymous said...

Adam should be number one on here. The only reason AI is no good anymore is because nobody will ever be able to sing as well as him, or look as good as him. I am thankful that Kris Allen is not on this list because he was one of the worst idol winners ever. He just cannot sing. I don't really like anyone else on the list that much either, but Kelly Clarkson used to be pretty good. I don't like most of her recent music though.

barb said...

I pretty much agree with your picks with the exception of two. I never did like Fantasia's voice(nails on a chalkboard) and couldn't stand to watch her perform. The other is Clay Aiken who is a phenomenal stage performer. His concerts are amazing. He is so funny and his voice is wonderful...he's a great entertainer, so much more than just a reality star.
As for Adam Lambert,I totally understand why his fans are so supportive of him, he is a great singer. However, I believe that he is part of the time in AI when they started pitting semi professionals against novices and this is so unfair. I do believe if the show continues with this practice it will ultimately be the downfall of the show because what is the point. All the best to the Adam Lamberts but bring back the ordinary Joe's trying to get heard .

Anonymous said...

I would have put Adam Lambert at number one but yes I see your reasoning :) Several big time publications like the LA Times for etc all have said Adam Lambert killed American Idol. Glad Bo got some recognition.

Anonymous said...

I have no interest in hearing "ordinary joe's" bleating on stage. Prefer those who have paid their dues, have great talent, but not gotten a break. Interesting performers. That's what Lambert was - and, to dismiss him because he worked like the very devil since he was 18 to make it, is unconscionable. And I agree with Carly - Lambert has the greatest voice ever to be on Idol (and, in my opinion, the best in the music biz today). It is unlikely that anyone of that quality will emerge from that show again since Lambert is not just a singer, but a dancer, and outstanding showman. He owns the stage. I thank Idol for giving him a platform, but it's Lambert himself who took that and made a career for himself.

Anonymous said...

Adam Lambert is the best American Idol and the international star they have always looked for. He is rated at #2 world wide for the best technical voice of all time... beating out Plant,Mercury etc. Sorry dude, he is no Lady Gaga, she doesn't hold a candle to the multi octave, awesome, classy, just be your self entertainer that Adam Lambert is. Adam did ruin AI for everyone else because as Simon once said of Adam "No one can top that now!" Rock on Adam Lambert, you are the best!!!

Anonymous said...

who the heck is Kris Allen??

Anonymous said...

Adam Lambert isn't even remotely the best singer Idol ever had. He is the freakiest and screeches sounds that sound like castrating pigs. This is not a good thing. Several Idols outsing and out class him.

Anonymous said...

Adam has gone platinum world wide , He is the only Idol able to head line his own world tour on his DEBUT album. You people can try and put him down all you want, but the awards world wide, Grammy nom.... platuimun is serveral countries speaks for its self. The greats like Brian May of Queen , Jackson all agree with his talent and his voice and if you call him a screecher you just show your ignorance. He is becoming Iconic no matter how much you trashers try and trash him. HJAHAHAHAHA

Anonymous said...

The comment section has turned from 'agreeing with and appreciating that my chosen idol is listed' into a fan-war. Ugly. Why put down another idol in trying to put up your own? Just appreciate your own without hating on another, please. THAT SAID, all idols mentioned are talented in their own ways, and deserved to be mentioned. Depending on which idol the fan is rooting for, there is probably someone who should be listed but not, since it is the TOP 10, and Bob reserve the right to put his T10 bcos it's his list.
ETA : I'm an Adam Lambert fan, and I choose not to hate on other idols who are above him in that list (it's what Adam would have said, to love and not hate :) )

Anonymous said...

"Real song writers, real musicians".

The show isn't 'American Idol, Search for a "real" songwriter', it is 'Search for a Superstar'. The voice is a musical instrument and Adam and Fantasia both play their instruments like maestros. Some of your list of "real musicians" play a few chords on the guitar or piano.

Kris and even to a lesser extent, are unproven as "real" songwriters. Kelly and Carrie both started out light on co-writes.

Crystal would be a more appropriate addition to your "real" songwriters list - her debut single is a pre-idol solo(?)write with real depth and something she fought for. What has Kris Allen done that gives him more credibility as a songwriter than that?

Anonymous said...

I think by now, anyone that says adam's screeches will be put to the test. There are countless articles from professional singers/musicians all over the world that put adam in the top 5 vocalists in the WORLD. An octave 5 note (which tone-deaf people classify as screeching) is NOT something any singer out there today (on the radio) Maybe kelly exception)can achieve.

Anonymous said...

Adam Lambert should have been #1 on your list, but I do agree with the rest of it. Can't wait for the day with Adam Lambert is no longer associated with American Idol. The spammers come out in every article that mentions Adam and they "try" to trash him. What does that say about him?? It says that fans of others are threatened by him. As Simon said to Lambert,"I believe with all my heart that we have found a world-wide star!" You sure did Simon !!!!

Anonymous said...

So Adam Lambert is NOT # 1 ???!!! Really?! Bo Bice? Hudson? How is it possible to Not have Adam as #1?!!

NOBODY CAN COMPARE TO ADAM!

Anonymous said...

I think this is an excellent list.

I agree that Adam Lambert broke Idol, but I think the biggest problem for them was that the damage was twofold. He turned the show on his head and then ultimately didn't actually win. Lee beating Crystal a year later cemented the idea that America gets it wrong and Idol isn't working.

Interesting thoughts on Bo Bice, at first I was like 'Bo? Really?' but then your blurb and couldn't agree more. Bo was the first Idol that ever got me excited for the show and I also thought he killed Carrie every week.

This is a cool list. This comment section bites. I came here to show support for the artists I like and mention a few other worthy contenders.

Wow. Why bother? Look at all these mean, snotty, insecure comments. Some of you sure know how to ruin the fun. This is a party made up of mostly buzzkills.

Excuse me, please. I have something better to do than flame things I don't like in a sad attempt to make things I like look better by comparison, and I definitely have better things to do than talk or argue with individuals who passionately pursue that behavior as a pastime.

(PS: Flame me. Go ahead, flame me like you flame everything you don't like. Prove me right.)

Anonymous said...

I'm an Adam Lambert fan, so obviously think he should be number 1. But also as an overseas poster would just like to add, that while I see so many blogs etc saying Carrie Underwood, Clay Aitken, Bo Bice,Kellie Pickler, Taylor Hicks, Fantasia etc are the best Idols, none of these have really made it outside the US. So while they may be huge in the states, most other places have barely heard of them. Most ex idols seem to go down the country route, and Country music is really a US phenonomen, very few people outside the states listen to it. Kelly Clarkson has had some International success, Daughtry to a lesser degree. Whilst Adam has been top 10 in 21 countries, top 5 in 13 of them, and no 1 in 7. He's platninum in several countries too, and keeps making the top 10 lists in different places, just today he was announced as the top international star in Israel, and the 9th in a poll from China...He's the first International star that Idol found.

slotqueenscarfo said...

I came back in just to say we are talking about American Idol here not Interntional Idol. And i don't know if your figures about adam are correct or for the other's either. I would have to research it.

What it boils down to is each person has their own taste in music and i'm not a fan of adam's music does that make me an idiot. I respect those that like his music but really if so many out there love his music then why didn't he win?

Also let's see what the next couple of years bring in his popularity. It has been said that others have had more time. That alone is telling because their still around and still making money all these years later.

Anonymous said...

ADAM LAMBERT IS NO. 1 TO ME. NO ONE COMPARE TO HIM!!!!

Anonymous said...

Everything you said about Kelly is the truth & yeah the show would have been canceled after season 1 if Kelly didn't win. Kelly is the best Idol worldwide always will be. To all you Adam fans Kelly is the only International Superstar. Yes, he has done well worlwide & is popular but he doesn't hold a candle aganist Kelly. To the person who said Kelly has made some international success you must know nothing about Kelly's career. She has made a bigger impact world wide than Adam. She has #1 hits all over the world, the only Idol to have a #1 hit on the Untied World Chart, #1 hit on the UK Chart, sold out shows all over in the world for the past six years, etc. It's Kelly who is in a league of her own. Also David Cook should be in the top 5.

Anonymous said...

To the above poster: while during American Idol season 8, the 2 contestants who were selling the most music on iTunes were Adam Lambert and Kris Allen. So Adam definitely was popular all during the season. However, Season 8 will definitely go down in history as possibly the most controversial season because of voting scandal, and most of all, if the revelation of Adam's sexual preference influenced the vote in the final weeks. Also, I am of the belief that RCA always intended to market Adam as an International star instead of domestic. Which is ranked on the Top 10 lists in a number of countries. I think now his team will begin to actively push for airplay once the second album is finished.

Anonymous said...

To me Clay is the only idol.
Best voice i have ever heard.
Adam hurts my ears...seriously.

Anonymous said...

I think most of your list was spot on. I don't believe Clay is a reality star but I do think his talent was overshadowed by the constant harassment by the media for him to come out, the ridiculous old women that follow him everywhere, and many of Clay's personal decisions. All in all, he seems happy so I guess his career is ok with him.

Anonymous said...

I respect everyone else's posts. But I have to put on record that I like Adam Lambert best. He gave the best performances ever in AI and his loss was the worst moment of AI.

Anonymous said...

David Cook is way, way too low on your list. He was #3 in rock on Billboard his year and was an amazing, original musician. Remember when he had more songs in the Billboard top 100 than any artist since the Beatles? Of course, since this is a self proclaimed Adam site, it is understood. Anyway, David is the one who set such a high bar for arrangement and emotional connection that viewers have been searching for a similar artist as their winner ever since. The music industry was stupid not to capitalize more on his momentum but a high ranking platinum album, two platinum singles and a gold, plus 154 stop tour with a high sold out percentage was not too shabby. Love that guy's music and always will. He is my top Idol, fershur, and I can hardly wait for his next album coming out in the spring. Woo hoo for real music!

Bob Zerull said...

This is absolutely not an Adam Lambert site and we've certainly never proclaimed that it was an Adam Lambert site.

Anonymous said...

Hmmm, I took this to mean you were team Adam.

"5. Adam Lambert – Oh my God why isn’t Adam Lambert number one? Our site has kind of become an Adam Lambert site. Listen I love Adam..."

And the comments also support that conclusion. It's ok though, whatever. Still looking forward to David Cook's spring album. Did I mention how much I love his lyrics? Beautiful, interesting, moving. Can hardly wait. *jumping up and down*

Bob Zerull said...

You took it wrong then.

Anytime we write about "American Idol" or anything somewhat related to Adam Lambert, his fans come out of the wood work and go crazy in the comment section. That's what I meant by that.

Anonymous said...

Ahh, you were parodying his fans with your comments. Got it.

Anonymous said...

I became an Idol fan in season 2, got to see Clay and Kelly tour together and really enjoyed them both. I continued to watch with various levels of interest until Season 8 when I was blown right outta my seat by Adam Lambert. No performer ever hit me in the heart the way he did, and he just keeps on doing it. I won't argue the ranking, I believe it is true that Adam is an act that nobody can follow - on Idol or off.

Anonymous said...

To the butthurt Cook fans. Yeah- David did well on the show and sang some great covers, and people were really excited about his album and bought it right away, but face facts- he bombed after that, no one liked his singles, and has pretty much become a no hit wonder since then. He will always be that guy that sang great covers on idol though- so you 'll always have that. Oh- and AC radio will always love his coronation song.

Anonymous said...

I mostly agree with this list. it was very good. Adam should have been number 2. i am a HUGE Adam fan, but the #1 spot belongs to Kelly. if she hadn't won and gone on to do so well, the show probably would've been canceled very quickly, and then Adam and the other Idols wouldn't have come to be as famous as they are now. and to the person who said Kelly isn't consistent with record sales, every single one of her albums has sold over 1 million copies and been certified platinum; although im not sure about All I Ever Wanted. plus she holds the record for the biggest leap on the Billboard charts going from #97 to #1. and this the second time she's done that. (she was the first to break the Beatles' record)so im pretty sure that she's done very well when it comes to sales. not every album can sell 11 million worldwide like Breakaway did, but she's been around for 9 years so she has some staying power. when Taylor Swift's been around for 9 years, then we'll talk. (yes i do like Taylor) and im not saying she's better than Beyonce. it's a matter of opinion. i like Beyonce but i think Kelly's better, again just my opinion. so in the words of Simon Cowell, "Kelly wasn't lucky to have found American Idol. American Idol was lucky to have found Kelly."

continued from my last comment
so thank you Kelly, for deciding to audition for American Idol and introducing the world not only to you and your music, but to many other amazing artists as well
