"Birds Of Tokyo reveals new video for 'Wild At Heart.'"

Recently, the cover of the Sydney Morning Herald entertainment guide declared … ‘Move Over Powderfinger – Birds Of Tokyo Are The New Face Of Rock.’

With an ARIA Award winning, self-titled album that surpassed Platinum sales, plus a platinum single ("Plans") and forthcoming appearance on the Big Day Out, the claim is not quite as far fetched as it may sound.

At the 2010 ARIA Awards, Birds Of Tokyo not only received 6 nominations, but walked away with their first ever ARIA for Best Rock Album. They also delivered one of THE performances of the night; propelling “Plans” higher up the iTunes chart than any other performance on that unforgettable TV show. That single is out now via an exclusive iTunes digital bundle, which includes previously unreleased acoustic recordings of "The Saddest Thing I Know" and "Wild At Heart."

In its 18th week of release ‘Plans’ is still in the Top 5 most played songs on Australian radio according to Mediabase and has jumped up to #13 on ARIA singles chart - the highest Australian artist single. The now Platinum-certified album is back inside the Top 10 on iTunes and currently #15 on this week’s ARIA chart following their Award show performance.

The self-titled disc has also attracted huge critical acclaim with four star reviews from nearly every leading publication in Australia. It has also been short listed for the prestigious “J Award” … Triple J’s gong for the best local work of the year – with the winner to be announced over coming weeks.

The band’s new killer single, "Wild At Heart" is the big hands-in-the-air singalong at the album’s core. There’s a solid pop thread through the song, placing it in the company of similar landmark songs from Split Enz to Midnight Oil, with many radio stations jumping onto the song following the ARIAs. The band just released an icy new video for the track which can be viewed via the band’s website http://www.birdsoftokyo.com/.

In touring news, Birds Of Tokyo will be appearing on the Big Day Out tour next year.

"Dredg guitarist Mike Engles influenced by Pink Floyd." - Interview

Rock group Dredg, whose 2009 release “The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion” was critically acclaimed, quickly jumped back into the studio for an early 2011 release that as of now is still untitled. Recently I got the chance to catch up with Dredg guitarist Mike Engles to talk about the upcoming album as well as some of his favorite concert memories.

Q - Hello?

A - Hey it’s Mike from Dredg.

Q - How are you doing?

A - Very well, sorry about the tardiness, I went to grab a coffee, walk off the bus. Us stupid rock stars, always late.

Q - It’s cool (laughs). So how would you describe the Dredg sound?

A - How would I describe our sound? We’ve changed a lot through the years. It’s tough to pinpoint, you’d almost have to ask for a certain record or time in our band. We have a lot of guitar driven rock, atmosphere. We also have a lot of melody and layers. When we started out in 1997, ’98 it was mainly heavy guitar driven music. Now there is a lot more instrumentation going on and different styles going into it.

Q - You released your last album in the middle of last year and I was reading online that you were already working on your next album for an early 2011 release. Is there any truth to that?

A - It’s done. It should be out I believe March 29th is the tentative release date.

Q - Why the quick turn around?

A - A lot of times we’re pretty reactionary. We took so long from our 2005 release to our 2009 release, because a various label things going on and we wrote so much material and put a lot of pressure on ourselves and ended up kind of shooting ourselves in the foot. This album, we came off the road, took a little bit of a break and just started writing again. We hooked up with our friend Dan the Automater who was our producer. He works very quickly and we were on the same page. Let’s do these different songs, let’s not over think it, let’s just make a unique record for ourselves. It’s a very different sounding record for us. It’s much more beats and keyboard based stuff, so it was fun.

Q - What is your band’s song writing approach? Is there a designated songwriter or does the band get together to write etc?

A - Our singer Gavin Hayes is the main lyricist. He definitely does all the lyrics. He’s always had a skill for that. When it comes to the actual music, it’s very collaborative. The way we wrote this record was very different than the way we wrote the previous records. Our previous records were mainly us in a room. We’d get together five days a week like a normal job and sit in the room for five or six hours and just jam and record everything and then go back and pick up the highlights and kind of piece it together. For this album we actually wrote it apart from each other. Gavin lives in Seattle I live in San Fransisco other guys live in the Bay Area around me, but we didn’t really get in the room all the time. We have pro tools and we just started sending each other files. We know a lot of people are doing that, but for us it was the first time writing that way. It was really fun and a totally different angle.

Q - What are your current touring plans?

A - We’re on tour right now with Circa Survive as we speak. In Salt Lake City and we finish in New York in a couple of weeks. We’ll probably take December off then go back out in February, when the albums out do America, maybe do Europe again. Hopefully get some good support tours.

Q - What can fans expect from your live show?

A - A lot of energy, just like our albums, a lot of diversity. A lot of dynamics, some very mellow parts and some very energetic loud parts, to kind of keep you on your toes, try new things.

Q - Is there a stand out performance in your career?

A - Yeah. I live in San Francisco and I’m from the Bay Area so the first time we sold out the Fillmore was kind of a lifelong dream. That one will always stick out in my mind. We ended up making it a live album, “Live at the Fillmore” from a second show there and that always sticks out.

Q - What was the first concert you saw live?

A - (Laughs) I saw Iron Maiden, Testament and Corrosion of Conformity in 1992 at the Cow Palace in San Fransisco. I went with my brother, who inspired me as a kid to play guitar. He was a drummer, he brought me. I was probably 13 years old, good times.

Q - Who was the artist or band that made you want to pick up the guitar?

A - When I was younger it was a lot of metal and punk. Bands like Black Sabbath, Randy Rhodes. A little bit later, maybe in high school Pink Floyd was really a big influence on me.

Q - Who are you listening to now?

A - All sorts of stuff. As you get older and I’m 31 so I listen to almost anything that is great. Blonde Red Head I love. We’re playing with a band called Animals as Leaders who are incredible. All sorts of stuff.

Q - That’s all I had, is there anything else you wanted to add?

A - I’d like to thank you guys at Zoiks! for taking the time to cover independent music.

"I'm officially Adam Lambert-ized."

I wrote a couple articles about Adam Lambert expressing how the entertainer is loved by many people despite being an openly gay man. The articles were about Lambert but what came about was the influx of love from Lambert’s fans for me.

I soon became “adopted” into the Lambert family. The message that Lambert gives out goes all the way down the chain of his fans. It’s no wonder he is who he is. Thanks for all the love and be sure that more Lambert articles will be coming their way via this publication.

“Dexter turns up the intensity. Series ending?”

What's it been, three weeks since I last wrote about "Dexter," maybe four? Sorry folks, a lot going on in the personal life that has taken me away from Zoiks!, but I found a couple minutes to write about "Dexter" this week. All season long I've been bitching about how the show started off slow. At first I could understand it, last season's ending was a shocker, but this season really took awhile to get going. Since my last post, the show has taken a turn for the best.

Dexter's world is coming unraveled more so than it has in any of the previous seasons. Sure there was Miguel and Doakes who figured out Dexter's secret, but they both met their demise. Now we're on the verge of everybody finding out. There's a suspended officer acting as a private investigator with evidence of Dexter planning his crimes. Deb, Dexter's sister, knows that the bad guys responsible for the barrel killings aren't fleeing, but rather being taken out one by one. Lumen (Julia Stiles' character) has been discovered by Deb as Dexter's new "tenant," but she was also the thirteenth barrel victim that Dexter happened to rescue.

My prediction is that Dexter is going to inadvertently pin this whole thing on Lumen…or at least Deb will. With only two episodes I'm dying to see how Dexter handles Quinn and the private investigator. I'm pretty sure there is going to be a letdown there, kind of like the ending of season 2. I hope that when the series of "Dexter" comes to an end, they don't announce it. I would love for it to end this season. As much as I love the show, if it came to a shocking end this season, it'd go down as one of the greatest shows ever. When they go through the motions, like they did in season 3, it can be watchable, but if they were to go out with a bang that it would be amazing.

"Whether you're Miley Cyrus or Slayer, you'll like Billy Joel's 'The Hits.'" – Music Review

I’m a huge fan of rock music, heavy metal, but I have a soft spot in my heart for virtuoso pianists. I love Elton John, Burton Cummings from The Guess Who, Zakk Wylde and of course the “Piano Man” himself Billy Joel. Recently he released another greatest hit package simply called “The Hits.” This is going to be the easiest review I’ve ever done. I don’t even need to listen to the album, I know the songs already.

My experience with Billy Joel goes back to my childhood. We had a free preview of the Disney Channel with our cable package. It was only a weekend deal, but during that weekend a Billy Joel performance at Yankee Stadium was broadcast. We taped the performance and I must have watched that live performance 50 times if not more. I spent my childhood watching “Rocky IV” and Billy Joel live at Yankee Stadium over and over again.

During the performance of “Piano Man” Billy and the entire band stopped playing and the crowd continued singing the song without missing a beat. Instantly I felt chills go through my body and thought, “I want to do that.” I never get teary eyed watching sad movies, but I do when I see a really cool musical moment take place. Billy Joel’s performance of “Piano Man” was my first moment like that.

Billy Joel has a three disc “Greatest Hits” set out there that is more appropriate for the diehard fan. “The Hits” is perfect for the casual fan. Let’s face it, everybody likes at least one Billy Joel song, I don’t care if you’re Miley Cyrus or Kerry King from Slayer. “The Hits” is the highlight from the three-disc “Greatest Hits” set. If you love Billy Joel, but you’ve played your “Greatest Hits” album to death, “The Hits” would make a nice replacement.

Some of the songs included on “The Hits” are: “Piano Man,” “New York State of Mind,” “The Longest Time,” “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” “The River of Dreams” and some of my favorites like “Allentown,” “I Go to Extremes,” “My Life,” “Pressure” and “Big Shot.” You and I both know you like Billy Joel, so if you don’t own any Billy Joel, or if you need a replacement, get out there and get Billy Joel, “The Hits.”

“Adam Lambert not winning Grammy Award should not define career.”

Adam Lambert was overseas when in an interview he talked about nabbing a Grammy Award. Although Lambert is eligible for a nomination he hasn't been nominated. It's not because he missed out; rather the nominations haven't come down yet.

Either Lambert knows something we don't or he's overly ambitious of the awards show. I think Lambert could and should win a Grammy but I don't believe it will define his career if he does not win or get nominated.

Years ago when Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears were up for the same Grammy, I was floored, make that shocked, when Spears won over Aguilera. The reason? Aguilera's voice is 110 times better than Spears.

So, if Lambert does get nominated but does not win, he should not be ashamed of anything he's accomplished. Instead, Lambert should know that stranger things have happened, such as Spears beating out Aguilera for a Grammy Award.

"Adam Lambert makes me gay – as in happy."

I’ve posted numerous articles about Adam Lambert, among other media juggernauts like Katy Perry, Demi Lovato and Lady Gaga. The one thing I’ve noticed is that Lambert’s fans definitely show up to show support for their guy.

Often times Lambert gets criticized for being gay, smoking pot on stage, or kissing a back up dancer in the middle of a concert. His concerts are protested yet Glamberts still come everyday to share their feelings for Lambert.

Why is that? Is it because these people are brainwashed? Or is it because Adam Lambert truly is the one entertainer that makes everyone happy? He’s voted sexiest male of 2010 in some polls, the best thing to come out of “American Idol” and is the one person who could actually fill the shoes of the legendary Freddie Mercury.

I, for one, being a hetero married male can honestly say I have a platonic man crush on Lambert. He’s the perfect entertainer. So I guess you could say I’m a Glambert. If nothing else, Adam Lambert makes me gay – as in happy.

Or am I just brainwashed?

"Adam Lambert sexier than Robert Pattinson and Johnny Depp?"

In a poll at Flecking Records, none other than Adam Lambert has been named sexiest male of 2010. Not only did Lambert win, he took over 50% of the vote. The website asked readers who the sexiest male was.

Some of the other nominees were Robert Pattinson, Ian Somerhalder, Zac Efron, Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio. That’s a pretty good accomplishment considering the company Lambert was in. So, what do you think? Is Adam Lambert the sexiest male of 2010?

"Michael Cera's 'Youth In Revolt' takes Cera's persona to the extreme." – DVD Review

Michael Cera is not everyone's cup of tea. His fey, nonchalant nebbish-ness is a put off for some but not for me. From “Arrested Development” to “Superbad” to now “Youth in Revolt” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” Cera's persona has become a wonderful comic tool that he wields with precision. It's fair to say that “Youth in Revolt” takes the Michael Cera persona to an extreme but it worked for me and will work for anyone who counts them a Cera fan.

Michael Cera stars in “Youth in Revolt” as Nick Twisp, a shy young man living with his slatternly mother (Jean Smart) and her loser boyfriend of the moment, Jerry (Zach Galifianakis). When Jerry gets in trouble with some local tough the 'family' has to go on the run. They take refuge in a trailer park where Nick spies the girl of his dreams, Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday).

Sheeni initially has no interest in Nick but his persistence is flattering and eventually she gives him a break but only after he becomes the bad boy of her dreams. Nick is no bad boy but when he manages to tick off Sheeni's parents it begins an unintended reputation that Nick must foster in order to keep Sheeni's attention.

After Jerry disappears Nick is forced to return home. Once there and torn from his beloved Sheeni, Nick must hatch a plan, a plan that will allow him to move back. This elaborate fiasco involves getting his dad (Steve Buscemi) a job and a place to live near the trailer park. Then, he has to convince his mom to kick him out and force him to live with dad. The ways in which Nick goes about this are part of a tricky, gloriously odd series of events that make up the plot of “Youth in Revolt.”

Director Miguel Arteta brings wonderfully subtle rhythm to some rather outlandish scenes and the conflict between the tone and the happenings in “Youth in Revolt” somehow emerges charming and very funny. The ways in which the direction is passive and the action is not clash so perfectly that if pushed in a more or less active direction the movie would tumble over.

Strangely, while the role of Nick Twisp seems custom built for the Michael Cera persona; “Youth in Revolt” is actually based on a series of novels from the early 1990's from writer C.D Payne. I have never read the novels but according to those who have it is as if Nick Twisp predicted Michael Cera and waited for his arrival before he could be brought to the big screen.

There is no other actor who could bring Nick Twisp to life other than Michael Cera. The changes of persona, the ways in which Nick imagines a more confident version of himself named Francois Dillinger, these are seemingly natural shifts for Michael Cera that would seem like comic extensions for other actors. Cera makes the move organic as if creating Francois came from his own mind.

People tend to see the Michael Cera persona as an example of limited range. I however, feel that what Michael Cera does on screen is quite challenging. He's like a modern day Chaplin carrying The Tramp persona from film to film, giving him different dimensions and playing him against different backgrounds and characters to a new and wonderful comic effect.

Watch Michael Cera in interviews and then watch Michael Cera in movies and on TV and you get the full picture of the Michael Cera character. It is as if his entire career was a performance art piece that he keeps spinning out further in role after role with different names but always the same character in a new and fascinating comic context. It's rather genius if you like what Michael Cera does.

If you aren't a fan then you will call it limited range and dismiss Cera as some one note performer. I happen to be a huge fan and I love his work more and more each time out and I feel like I am in on a wonderful running gag that never stops and grows more and more fascinating with each role. One of these days the Michael Cera persona is going to hit upon a role that will cross over from just funny to poignant and even moving and more people will begin to get it. “Youth in Revolt” likely isn't that movie but for fans it's enough for now.

"Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal's 'Love and Other Drugs' is worth the ticket price." – Movie Review

I have long believed that the best movies reveal something not just about the characters on screen but the audience watching them. The new romance “Love and Other Drugs” starring Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal and directed by Ed Zwick has moments that reached into my soul and revealed things to me that I have been trying to hide. The movie is far from perfect but for a few minutes, “Love and Other Drugs” is very touching and for that it's worth the ticket price.

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in “Love and Other Drugs” as Jamie Randall, a good for nothing horn dog who gets fired from his job for having sex with his boss's wife while the boss is in the other room. Based solely on charm and good looks Jamie falls into an even better job with even more promise of sexual conquest, working as a drug rep for Pfizer.

Drug rep, as we are informed, is the only entry level position with a starting pay in the six figure range. The job plays to Jamie's strength as it involves no skill other than being charming, the only real skill he has. With the help of his new partner Bruce (Oliver Platt), Jamie has only to get sales up a little and he will move on from the lowly depths of the Ohio River Valley to the big time in Chicago.

Jamie is on the fast track when he meets Maggie (Anne Hathaway), a beautiful 26 year old artist/waitress with early on set Parkinson’s disease. At first she is the perfect woman, her disease makes her only seek a sexual relationship with little emotional involvement, seemingly Jamie's dream relationship. It doesn't take a rocket scientist however to figure out that eventually the heartless hound dog will fall for Maggie and she will push him away.

Director Ed Zwick, with script assists from Marshall Herskovitz and Charles Randolph, uses the bones of the book "Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman" by Jamie Reidy to craft a love story about an emotionally stunted man who slowly evolves the soul he had buried so deeply within himself. It's a story that will be painfully familiar to a lot of men who have hidden behind charm in order to keep real feeling at bay.

Jake Gyllenhaal captures the emotionally stunted Jamie perfectly; hiding behind quick wit and a sheepish smile that hides a wolf's intentions. Jamie is constantly on the prowl until he meets Maggie who gives him exactly what he wants while telling him it's what he wants and with unintended consequence teaches him the well worn lesson 'be careful what you wish for.'

On the periphery of this love story is the story of the pharmaceutical business and its many disquieting practices. In this part of the story Director Zwick vacillates between wanting to damn and shame the industry and stay true to Jamie Reidy's book which is neither damning or shaming but merely observant and humorous.

Zwick includes scenes where Maggie takes a group of seniors to Canada in order to buy drugs. If this is meant as a stick in the eye to the industry it doesn't land because it doesn't seem to phase Jamie in the least as he ends up going on a trip with her that is only part of their love montage, that series of scenes set to a love theme that acts as shorthand for movie characters falling in love.

Was Zwick meaning to allude to the problems we all seem to have with Pharmaceutical companies these days or elude criticisms of those who would argue he did not damn and shame the industry enough? Whatever he was trying is the biggest failure of “Love and Other Drugs” as it merely seems a distraction from the film's more interesting elements, the lovely chemistry between stars Jake Gyllenhaal.

These two wonderful actors bring out the best in each other. The scenes they shared, all too briefly, in “Brokeback Mountain” crackled with life and were sorrowful reminders of that film's tragic themes. In “Love and Other Drugs” Gyllenhaal and Hathaway lay each other bare literally and emotionally and let the audience in as if it were some sort of emotional three way.

Given Maggie's condition and her side gig taking seniors to Canada for drugs, one would assume the Pharmaceutical industry would be in for something of a beating in “Love and Other Drugs.” Instead, either Ed Zwick didn't really have the nerve for an indictment or didn't have the goods for a solid take down. Zwick force feeds the minor jabs at big pharma in “Love and Other Drugs,” they really weren’t part of Jamie Reidy’s book, as a way of satisfying those who would be upset about a love story in this setting that doesn’t address real concerns about drug companies and their supposedly unethical practices.

In the end, “Love and Other Drugs” is a good movie that gets in its own way trying to answer critics who may or may not exist. I'm sure someone might have attacked the film for ignoring the alleged abuses of the pharmaceutical industry but that should not have been a concern for Zwick and the creators of “Love and Other Drugs.” The point here is the love story and the good humor and watching a boy become a man under tough emotional circumstances. The story of Jamie and Maggie on its own is worth the price of a ticket. The rest of “Love and Other Drugs” is unfortunately unfocused and greatly lacking. I recommend the film but with reservations.

"'Tangled' is one of the happiest, most joy filled movies ever put to the screen." – Movie Review

In its 50th original animated feature Disney has once again hit a home run. “Tangled” is a joyous musical treat for the ears and the eyes as even in 3D Disney's classic hand drawn style manages to shine. Re-imagining the fairy tale Rapunzel as a romantic musical adventure directors Nathan Greno and Byron Howard and writer Dan Fogelman have reinvigorated the tale for a new audience to love.

Mandy Moore offers the voice of Rapunzel. Trapped in a tower by Mother Gothel, the woman she believes is her real mother, Rapunzel spends her days reading, painting and singing with her chameleon pal Pascal, who thankfully cannot duet, he's not a talking chameleon. One day, while indulging her usual pursuits, Rapunzel finds a man in her tower; Flynn Ryder (Zachary Levy, NBC's Chuck) is on the run from the kingdom having stolen a precious royal heirloom.

Rapunzel may have spent the last 18 years trapped in a tower but that doesn't stop her from whipping pretty boy Flynn's butt with her magical long blonde hair. Using her magical locks to toss, trip and tie up Flynn, Rapunzel quickly realizes that what her 'mother' told her about the outside world being dangerous might be true but that she cannot take care of herself is completely false.

Once Flynn is subdued Rapunzel decides that the rakish thief would be the perfect guide to the outside world. She will hold his stolen goods until he shows her the kingdom's annual Lantern Festival, up close. If you cannot guess where this is heading, a few songs, romance, more cute animals eventually a happy ending, you aren't trying.

“Tangled” is not about the preordained outcome thankfully. Rather, it's about a joyous musical journey where the gorgeous music of composer Alan Menken and the perfect Disney Princess voice of Mandy Moore takes hold of you and elevates you to a state of blissful happiness. In all seriousness, “Tangled” is one of the happiest, most joy filled movies ever put to the screen.

Happy and joy filled without being cloying or too cute. Mandy Moore and Zachary Levy strike just the perfect chords as the spunky Princess and the suave yet goofball rake. Director's Nathan Greno and Byron Howard create a gorgeous world for these characters and while there is darkness on the edges, a pair of twins known as the Stabbington brothers, the focus is on the warm, the fuzzy and the fun.

The music of Alan Menken may not hold a standout single, nothing that could become a hit beyond the movie, but he nails the joyful tone and Moore seems born for Menken's spunky lyrics that she can deliver with effortless, honest delight without ever becoming excessively sweet or sentimental.

There is a simple, honest excitement that radiates from every inch of “Tangled.” The film is a complete delight, a near overdose of fun. Even in 3D, which I mostly loathe, “Tangled” manages to shine. Great songs, great characters and even a touch of chaste romance combine with classic Disney animation to create arguably the biggest surprise of 2010. “Tangled” may be one of the best movies of the year.

"Adam Lambert makes me want to hug someone." – VIDEO

Check out this video from Milan where Adam Lambert puts an end to two arguing fans in the crowd. During his introduction of his dancers, Lambert tells the two to stop fighting and hug one another. (Forward to the 6:38 second mark.)

He said, “I’m trying to sing about love and you two are trying to fuck up one another.” Lambert doesn’t stop until the two hug. Once this occurs, Lambert introduces his dancers.

I don’t know about you, but Lambert makes me want to hug someone. Do someone a favor and hug him or her. Tell that person, Adam Lambert told me to.

"Frentik's 'The Firecracker' is similar to Taylor Momsen and The Pretty Reckless – sort of." – Music Review

I first thought Frentik was a female singer with a voice like Pat Benatar and Joan Jett. After all, every picture featured “Frentik” on stage or in promo. There really wasn’t a “band” surrounding her; at least one that didn’t look like a back-up one. It wasn’t until I visited the band’s official website that I learned Frentik was a four piece band. The bio said that Frentik’s music was guitar and synth driven around a pop savvy appeal.

Although the band’s EP “The Firecracker” is not particularly guitar or synth driven, there is a pop savvy appeal – front woman Emily Jaye, or EJ, a firecracker in her own right. Aside from EJ’s voice, the songs’ lyrics are what separate Frentik from all the other pop/rock bands fronted by a female singer.

Songs like “Firecracker” and “The Edge” are potential hits for Frentik but to really stand-out in the music industry, there really has to be something sexy and attention grabbing. For Frentik, that’s front woman EJ.

I really enjoyed the EP but it sounded very familiar in sound of what’s out now. The Pretty Reckless, fronted by “Gossip Girl” Taylor Momsen is another band similar to Frentik. The difference though is Momsen is on a hit show and has recently been in the media for being underage and flashing her breasts. The Pretty Reckless’ media coverage is wider than Frentik’s.

For Frentik to be successful, I think the band should go further in promoting EJ, and not just via promotional pictures. Maybe changing the name to EJ and the Firecrackers or Emily Jaye’s Frentik will garner more attention. EJ is a smoking hot woman with a powerful voice.

As of now, I’m afraid that Frentik will get lost with a lot of other similar sounding bands out there. And that’s a shame because the music is very good. It would just be sexier if the songs were sung by Emily Jaye’s Frentik.

"Christina Aguilera's 'Burlesque' is so bad it's good fashion." – Movie Review

There is a near overdose of camp in Steven Antin's “Burlesque.” Whether it's Cher or Christina Aguilera or a story of a small town girl in the big city with big dreams, everything seems to come up kitsch in this tremendously familiar story. Camp is not such a bad thing; especially when it is accompanied by some good tunes and some big unintended laughs.

Christina Aguilera takes the role of the typical small town girl with the surprisingly big voice and even bigger dreams (blech). Ms. Aguilera plays Ali who escapes her tiny Iowa town for the bright lights of Los Angeles where she hopes to find work as a back up singer or dancer. One day as she is wandering the streets with what is apparently a 'dancers wanted' newspaper page in hand, Ali comes across a place called Burlesque.

Inside there is a show going on starring the club's owner Tess (Cher) who literally sings as Aly walks in "Welcome to Burlesque." At the bar Ali meets Jack (Cam Gigandet) who strikes up a flirtation hindered by the fact that she thinks he's gay. Taken backstage she begs for a job and ends up a waitress. Eventually, Ali ends up on stage and blah, blah, blah.

“Burlesque” is not about plot, it's about massive excess and outrageous everything. “Burlesque” is pure camp from the ludicrously cheeseball story to the outlandish stage presentation and especially to the friendship between Tess and her gay best friend Sean (Stanley Tucci) which is every stereotypical gay man's wet dream. The camp is at near overdose level from beginning to end in “Burlesque” and it's up to you if that is a good or bad thing.

Myself, I enjoyed “Burlesque” in the sort of so bad it’s good fashion. My favorite part is how the club is suffering serious financial troubles and may be about to close. I'm just guessing here but I think the reason the club is going under is because they spend as much on massive stage spectacles as your average Broadway spectacular and their wardrobe budget likely exceeds the mortgage on the building which allegedly houses this club. Hell, the wig budget alone could probably pay off what is owed to keep the club open.

We aren't supposed to think practically about what happens in “Burlesque” and really why would we? There is no reality even attempting to take hold in this fabulized version of “The Wizard of Oz” crossed with “A Star Is Born.” Someone in the media described “Burlesque” as a 'gay fantasia' and really I cannot top that word perfect description of “Burlesque.”

I could complain that Cam Gigandet is miscast or that Alan Cumming is in the cast but barely used and that Kristen Bell is far too cardboard to be a proper villainess but none of that matters and by the end I didn't care about the movie-ish things that were wrong with “Burlesque;” I was too busy smiling and giggling to care about practicalities.

“Burlesque” is just self serious enough to pity and self aware enough not to be completely terrible. I think all involved had an idea that they were creating kitsch but hedged a little in hope that maybe there was a chance it could all be taken seriously. It cannot be taken seriously but it still works in its very unique, camp fashion. You have to be a fan of over the top, so bad its good fun to enjoy “Burlesque” but if that is your humor, you will love this movie.

By the way, does anybody know if Cher is a fan of the musical “Dreamgirls?” I ask because in “Burlesque” Cher sings a song called “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” that is a near perfect knock off of Effie’s “And I’m Telling You, I’m Not Going.” Knock off or not, the song shows that Cher probably could pull off that extraordinarily difficult “Dreamgirls” standard even at 62 years old. That alone might be worth the price of admission to “Burlesque.”
