"Tumbledown's new album 'Empty Bottle' comes out October 26th." - Interview

I’ve never heard of alternative country until I came across the band Tumbledown. The band’s music is a mix between country and rock. With Tumbledown’s new album, “Empty Bottle,” coming out October 26th, it’s probably about time people discovered alternative country. Tumbledown’s Harley Trotland recently stopped by to talk about the new album.

Q – Thanks for doing this. Tumbledown’s music is considered alternative country. What exactly is alternative country?

A - Alternative country to us is a country rhythm with rock n' roll guitar tones and a fast paced live show.

Q - What other bands fall into this category?

A- We tend to listen to a lot of outlaw country, guys like Willie, Waylon, Cash and Christopherson, but our music comes out sounding more like some of the younger bands like the old 97's, Sonvolt and Slate Cleeves with a bit newer sound.

Q – Tell me about the new album, “Empty Bottle,” which comes out October 26th.

A - What I remember about recording was being on a tight schedule. We had a busy year touring on our first album, which gave us a short window of time to record, mix, master, and get all the guest spots done in order to make our press deadline for “Empty Bottle.” In the midst of this, we had to juggle in a photo shoot for the artwork and make sure everything was in order by our deadlines. All in all we did it, so all is well that ends well!

Q – What do you think of shows like “American Idol” that promise a lot for essentially winning a contest?

A - I think there are ups and downs to shows like “American Idol.” It’s a bummer for some of them to make it all the way just to be a flash in the pan, but if they have talent they deserve to be heard just like anyone. I try to look at the bright side of the show and the full concept of it, how it is educating our audience to recognize what a good singer is and it kind of raises the bar in that respect.

Q – What is your opinion about the music industry in terms of people being discovered via YouTube and MySpace?

A - YouTube is great for the fans and musicians. You can upload live performances and check out any song by any artist very easily. That to me is very helpful and keeps the music industry alive. MySpace is a great tool for us too. It allows us to keep in contact with all of our friends and let them know about upcoming tours and press.

Q – Thanks again for taking the time. Is there anything you wanted to add?

A - Make sure to pick up a copy of our new album, “Empty Bottle,” available on October 26, 2010 and to check out our website (http://www.tumbledownhq.com/) for tour updates.
