"The Sleeping's 'Big Deep' interview. To tour with Finger Eleven." - Interview

The Sleeping is back with the band’s fourth and best album yet, “The Big Deep,” released on Victory Records. Currently the guys are on the road with The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and up next they hit the road with Finger Eleven, before they head out on their headlining tour. Recently I got a chance to chat with front man and guitarist Douglas Robinson.

Q - How would you describe your band’s sound?

A - I don't really have any specific way to describe it. Just 5 honest dudes who pour their hearts into their instruments.

Q - You guys recently released your fourth album. How was the process different this time around than on previous albums?

A - This record was recorded with the same people who produced our first 2 records (Mike Birnbaum and Chris Bittner) and even though we have recorded with them before, this record was created throughout the whole summer, which is completely new to us. We always recorded in the wintertime but for once we were finally able to leave the cabin between sessions and go out and experience being a band in a completely different way. It's such an inspiring thing to wake up with your friends and go on 20 mile bike rides around mountains and beautiful scenery. It really had a huge role in the making of this record. You can feel the vibes all over the album. Every time I am asked this question.. that winds up being the main difference because we honestly feel it helped make the record what it is, which is an all natural vibe-heavy record.

Q - How does the band write their music? Is their one primary song writer or do you just get in a room and jam out your songs?

A - It's always just a big jam session. We will get to the rehearsal space and hang for a bit before we turn the recording gear on and just jam for hours. If something intense comes along throughout the session, we stop the jam and start jamming off of what all of us took a liking to. Then the process of weeding out comes into play and then we have a song.

Q - What's your favorite song on the album and why?

A - I honestly couldn't pick a favorite. I am very proud of all of them. We really made the record we have always wanted to make and picking a favorite song would be like picking my favorite child.

Q - What's your favorite song to play live?

A - Depends on where my head is at during each show. Every night I connect with a different song depending on the mood I am in.

Q - Are there any touring plans?

A - We just finished a tour with The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and next we have dates with Finger Eleven, followed by our headlining US tour which starts in October.

Q - What can your fans expect from your live shows?

A - They can expect 5 dudes to get into a vibe doing what they love and hopefully leaving with some type of connection with the songs and/or performance.

Q - Who are some of your earliest musical influences?

A - Well, punk rock was my earliest influence. Listening to bands like The Germs, NOFX, etc. made me want to play music terribly!

Q - Thanks for taking the time, that's all I had, is there anything else you'd like to add?

A - Thank you so much... pick up “The Big Deep!”
