"O'mega Red's 'Red October' out October 2010." – Music Review

O’mega Red has people buzzing in the world of hip hop. He’s not only a rapper and a writer, he’s an actor, he’s the CEO of Jugganautz Music Group and a label exec for Stay Grindin’ Inc. Sure, that’s all well and fine but he’s also Donna Summer’s nephew…it’s things like that that always seem to peak my interest. She’s a disco goddess and one hell of a performer so hopefully that kind of DNA was passed down. There’s good evidence that he’s headed in the right direction. His single “Endz” featuring Detail has been burning up the charts on iTunes and the good news? It’s a great single.

The Massachusetts native might be on to something and by the sounds of it he could fit right in with the many hit-makers on the radio.

O’mega Red has an ear for melody and is actually quite the hood poet. His lyrics, whether they describe stories from the streets or his feelings about love, are written with care showcasing his knack for a good hook.

Now, with his sights set on an album due for release in October (“Red October” Stay Grindin), O’mega Red has released yet another Redtape volume hosted by Chubby Chubb. Usually, these serve as a precursor to prepare you for the greatness of what’s to come.

But there’s something that’s always bothered me about DJ’s hosting albums. While I’m in love with the idea that they’re serving the artist these sorts of mashed-up mix tapes of sorts they don’t really give you a crisp, clear look at the album. As a matter of fact, they tend to detract from the actual product they’re hyping.

Such is the case with what might be an otherwise interesting hip hop record. O’mega Red’s Redtape Volume 3 showcases a talented wordsmith that’s overshadowed by DJ Chubby Chubb’s hollering and self-advertising. The minute I started enjoying each track, Chubby Chubb broke in - causing a panic attack.

I was constantly forced to remind myself that the smooth voice of Red would be returning soon and each time it did it was welcome. Again, I get why these volumes are released but to be truthful it would make more sense to wait for the actual album. Red’s website has cleaner versions of some of these songs. Why not head over there and sample the finished tracks for yourself: www.staygrindin.com.

“Red October,” the full length will be released in October. Standout Songs: “She luvs it” feat Detail, “Endz” and “Hold On.”
