"Jaicko's new album 'Can I' is Caribbean infused pop." – Interview

Don’t think because singer/songwriter Jaicko is only 18-years-old that he doesn’t have experience in music. The truth is music has always been a part of him. Coming from Barbados, the up and comer’s new album “Can I” will debut this summer. Jaicko recently stopped by to talk about his upcoming record.

Q – In your bio you say that when you first grew out your hair you knew music would become your life. If Barbados was strict on dress code, why did you decide to grow your hair out?

A - My dad had long hair - I thought it was cool and I felt like it represented who I am. I didn't want compromise myself and conform and therefore I stood my ground and was expelled.

Q – What was it about music that made you want to pursue it?

A - Music is my life. There was never a moment I decided to pursue it because for as long as I remember I was making music and then it became my career.

Q – Real quick, describe your music for those who know little about you?

A - Caribbean infused pop.

Q – Who were your influences in music?

A - Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, and Stevie Wonder - all time greatest!

Q – How do you go about incorporating influences in your work while at the same time maintaining individuality?

A - When I listen to my musical heroes they inspire ideas - I never set out to recreate what they did because it is untouchable.

Q – With a lot of bands and musicians trying to make a name for themselves, what about YOU is unique that separates you from the rest of the pack? In other words, why would I choose your album versus someone else’s?

A - I am a songwriter and a producer - throughout my album I'm telling a story. I am an 18-year-old from Barbados. "Can I" is the story of my journey and my life. My album is unique because it combines songs that make you wanna dance or records you wanna blast it in the car but with meaningful lyrics that are close to me and expose a little bit of who I am to my fans. My honesty sets me apart.

Q – Your debut album, “Can I” debuts this summer. What can fans expect from this album?

A - A fun album full of music that makes you want to go out, dance, go to the beach... it has a summery feel and, like I said, incorporates lyrics that tell a story. I am very proud to share this project with the world.

Q – What was the recording process like?

A - Because I was signed off of my record "Can I," the title track from the album, I had about four records that I already wrote and produced when we started. The rest of the tracks we found and got in and recorded really quickly. The studio is where I thrive; we pretty much finished the whole album in 6 weeks. I learned a lot from the A list producers who I had the honor of working with, from Stargate to Jim Jonsin.

Q – What’s your favorite song on the album and why?

A - Every song is close to me so it's hard to say but probably "Can I" because it is a song of ambition and dedication.

Q – When you’re writing music, do you think about the reaction it will get from fans or is it about your tastes, background and creativity?

A - I don't write to have a smash on the radio or a lot of sales on iTunes. I write because that's how I express myself. My only hope is to inspire my fans.

Q – Anything you wanted to add?

A - Thank you to my fans and I can't wait for you to hear "Can I" coming this summer!
