"Ahmed Best says playing 'Star Wars'' Jar Jar Binks was a good start." – Interview

Fans of “Star Wars” remember Jar Jar Binks as the “first Gungan to represent his people in the Galactic Senate, first serving as a Junior Representative along with Senator Padmé Amidala, and then, after her death, serving as full Senator himself.” (Wookieepedia) However, people may not know the voice behind Binks. Ahmed Best, the voice behind the fictional, er, real alien if you’re a “Star Wars” fan, was a huge fan of the series.

Q – Thanks for doing this.

A - No prob!

Q – You’ve been in major productions. Most notably you were Jar Jar Binks. How did this role come about?

A - I auditioned for it. I was in San Francisco doing Stomp, and Robin Gurland discovered me. She brought me to George and the rest was history.

Q – Were you a big “Star Wars” fan growing up?

A - Huge!

Q – How did landing this role rate on your career-mometer?

A - It was a good start.

Q – How does preparing for a voiceover role differ from an onscreen one?

A - It doesn't really. The only thing different is that it is more forgiving when it comes to experimenting with the character and the script.

Q – You started off as a musician. How did you get involved in acting?

A - I always did both growing up. It just so happened the acting track moved faster.

Q – You were also on Broadway in “Stomp.” How different is it being in front of a live audience versus a film crew?

A - Live is instant gratification. Film you get several chances to get it right. Both are great, but there's nothing like instant gratification.

Q – From imdb, it says you have a few projects coming up – “The Reapers” (2010), “Some Guy Who Kills People” (2010), “2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams” (2010). These all sound like horror movies. What determining factors are there when thinking about doing a sci-fi movie like “Star Wars” versus a drama, horror, or comedy?

A - None. I love to work.

Q – I saw the title for “Charlie's Bitch Ass Hos.” Tell me about this movie. How did you get involved, etc?

A - It's an interactive sketch comedy game show. It's the brainchild of my good friend Flow. She needed some actors and she's a friend, so I jumped in.
