Tonight the top ten girls performed on “American Idol.” Tonight was a frustrating night. Every single girl has a unique/amazing voice, but most of the girls failed to really make an impression. Like the guys there were three standout girls, but unlike the guys there is nothing but potential in the remaining group of girls. I don’t know who I would send home, but if they decided they wanted to toss four guys out instead, I’d be all for that.
The girls’ performances were pushed back a night due to Crystal Bowersox falling ill. She didn’t just have a cold, she was in the hospital she was so ill. She made it back tonight and if they hadn’t said anything you wouldn’t have been able to tell she was sick 24 hours ago. Crystal was the first contestant to go and she is one of my three standouts of the night. She is doing so well because she wasn’t a fan of “American Idol” in the past and she’s stubborn enough to do what she wants. She knows what kind of performer she is and if the audience doesn’t like it, then tough she’s going to do what she wants anyway.
Standout performer number two was Lilly Scott, who like Bowersox is very independent. The difference between Lilly in Crystal is that Lilly is more authentic while Crystal is a dime a dozen. Crystal is great but she’s like those “Goth kids” in high school who think they’re being original. She’s the hippy girl with a guitar, with the difference being she can really sing, but she’s still the hippy girl with a guitar. Lilly is very unique. She plays a lot of different (some of them unique) instruments and her music goes right along with that. The problem with Lilly is that she’s too smart for “American Idol.” She’ll do well, but she’ll go home earlier than she should because her performances are over the audience’s head.
(Katelyn Epperly)
Quirky Siobhan Magnus is standout number three. Siobhan is this goofy little girl with her own style, but when she sings, she’ll blow your mind. She did Aretha Franklin tonight and looking at her walking onto the stage as the song was starting I was preparing myself for a disaster. I did not expect her to hit the notes she ended up hitting. The judges, particularly Randy, didn’t even know what to say. She was that impressive.
Who’s going home? I have no idea. Possibly Haeley Vaughn, but I thought she improved from last week. She took on Miley Cyrus this week. She’s got a much better voice than Miley, but has trouble staying on key. She’s very likable though, so it could really be anybody.
As a fan of rock music I would like to add that America got to witness something special tonight. America got to witness a Creed song played properly. Michelle Delamor took on “With Arms Wide Open” and made into a Whitney Houston-esque ballad and it worked so much better than a “rock song.” That said it’s still a Creed song and she didn’t quite make it into my list of standouts.
I do have a prediction for who’s going to win the show. The winner will be Katelyn Epperly. I have yet to consider her a standout, but the best never win. Let’s go down the list starting with Adam Lambert, Bo Bice, Jennifer Hudson, Chris Daughtry, Melinda Doolittle. Epperly has a great voice; she’s cute and has a good stage presence. Unless she makes a big misstep she’ll be in the competition for a long time and could be the next Jordin Sparks.
