"'LOST:' Parallel Universe? Season 6. Episode 1."

By Bry Schulz

Last night’s “LOST” was a mind-bender. As usual when the show ended I said out loud to the empty room: "What?" What indeed. I do believe “LOST” just blew our minds people! Instead of saying, "Yes the reboot worked and the plane lands safely," or "No, the reboot failed and we continue on as so," they said “WHAT IF BOTH HAPPEN!” That, I do believe, can be described as a parallel universe. Well, thanks “LOST” creators. Thanks a heap. Just when I think that I'm going to get answers, I find more questions. And then I have to ask myself, "Does this piss me off?" And I have to say, "No." At this point I've been playing this “LOST” game for five years and frankly I am not angry, I am surprised I didn't expect it. I mean really, answer questions? How could I be so silly?

So, in this new season of “LOST” it looks as though we'll be riding another crazy train. We'll be seeing both scenarios (and excuse me but could there be even more or can we just deal with the two universes?) and I am just as “LOST” in my theorizing as I've always been. Where are they going with this? I don't know. Don't look at me. But I am excited. Now that I've had a while to wrap my brain around this idea I feel more and more excited. Juliet said, "It worked," referring to the reboot so I think that means eventually our Islanders will come to know about their off Island selves? Maybe? I hope.

What I liked:

I liked that the Man in Black revealed himself to be the smoke monster. Hey, we did get a question answered. There has been lots of speculation in that direction so it's not like we didn't see that coming but hey, we got an answer. I liked that Kate got away from the airport (in the off island universe) and ended up in a cab with Clair. I wonder where that will lead. A friendship maybe? Maybe one where they'll end up stranded together in a few weeks and Kate will have to deliver Clair's baby? No? Probably not. I also was excited to learn more about this whole Jacob vs. Man in Black situation. While Jacob was killed by Ben (who's looking like he regrets that one big time!) he still showed up to help Hurley with Sayid. I was totally intrigued by the Locke/Man in Black guy. He is so totally not a good guy. I just kept getting a God/Devil vibe there that I've been getting from them since last year.

What I didn't like:

All the new people in the temple. Yeah I know that flight attendant isn't "new-new." And we saw the kids. There's another question answered, where have the kids been? Oh, they've been with these other OTHERS in the temple. Oh. Alright. But there is a big part of me who is kind of irked that we are yet again being introduced to more characters and more groups of civilizations this late in the game. Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to watch and obsess relentlessly. But I'm going to do it with a pouty bottom lip and my arms crossed for the first few weeks.

Next week looks to be yet even more mind bogglingly awesome. I'm eager to see more of this parallel universe business. I want to see more of the off island side of the reboot. I like seeing the possibilities they have over there. I'm interested to see how their characters come to know one another. Because you know they don't end up just going their separate ways. And I read an interview with “LOST” exec-producers that was very helpful in explaining this whole "Parallel Universe" conundrum. Check it out. And don't forget to check out Doc Jensen's EW blog once it's posted. Always good stuff! Until next week.

Namaste!
